A post from The Oval made by David Jackson quotes former president Harry Truman to have allegedly said , “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog”. I think that this is the best advice that an experienced leader could impart to his successors. And this is why I am able to tell my story as a pet to the 44th First Family of the United States of America. My name is Bo Obama, with a registered name of “Amigo’s New Hope” in the American Kennel Club, and I am the First Dog. I had a second chance at a loving home after I was returned to the Sterns by my former owner whose identity I prefer to keep a secret.
The Humane Society of the United States says that 3 million healthy and treatable cats and dogs are being put down in shelters every year and I am lucky to have avoided this fate. I am whole-heartedly thankful to Sen. Edward Kennedy (whose dog Cappy is my former littermate and who I miss so much) for making me a gift to the Obamas when in fact it was the other way around. The Obama’s are a gift to my dejected soul, and I bring with me a sincere promise to serve this family in my fullest potential. Yes, I am a Portuguese water dog. But foreign as I may sound, I am American in heart, body and spirit.
My alluring features, with my fluffy hair and the innocent look I possess may be the cause of skepticism for some. My master, being the father of the nation, needs a fierce dog who could protect him and I may not have fit the bill. But, if my barks could be translated into words comprehensible to all, it would be words expressing my full allegiance and offering of my life. When I first caught sight of the White House that fateful day of April 14, 2009, I knew then that this is where I belong. This is what I was meant to do. My preparations for my role was not simple.

My good behavior has been attributed to the rigorous training I had at a secret location outside Washington by the Kennedy’s dog trainers. Upholding PETA’s call for responsible dog ownership, I have been neutered. Though I may not be able to procreate, my support for this advocacy is outspoken considering the number of homeless brothers and sisters of mine littering the country. Now that I have the power and the position vested in me, I plan to partake in the task of influencing others to be more humane and responsible in dealing with not only domesticated pets but the entire animal world.
Serious as my nature is, I am a fun loving pet and my carefree and energetic attitude is an attraction between me and the two princesses of the White House. My love for both Malia and Sasha is unconditional because I came to their lives as a contract between them and their father. I know that they had the hardest time in deciding and to quote the president in Weiner’s aticle in The Huffington Post, “This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary”. Notwithstanding the fact that my dear Malia has allergies, it was a decision that took much thought.
Fortunate enough that I do not shed fur, I was a good candidate and was eventually chosen. I offer the best delight to my new family by walking and playing with them in our vast lawn. It is a shame that my swimming skills has been an issue at first, but I am overcoming this obstacle to enjoy more moments with my family. However, the life of a first dog is not all play. I aid the mother of the White House, Michelle, in performing her first lady duties. Once I accompanied her during an event to welcome children of Executive Office employees.
Considering the increase in my popularity, I have also gained celebrity status. I have already released my first official portrait on a baseball card available for all those who find me endearing. I am also to star in my first children’s book, “Bo America’s Commander in Chief”. Humility aside, despite all the attention I am getting I am still keen on focusing my attention on the job that I was meant to do. Life in the White House is complex and the constant pressure is unavoidable. The president has the responsibility of the country in his hands and his family also bears the same social responsibility.

The Term Paper on Dog Breeding and Society
Dogs are known to be man’s best friend. Cliche as it may sound like, dogs have proven continually over the centuries since they were first domesticated, just how helpful they can be in human lives.
