The Great Gatsby When Hamlet said, “Frailty thy name is woman”, he was making a statement about women in general, based on the actions of his mother. We can see that this expression also holds true in The Great Gatsby. The most similar characters in the two books would likely be Queen Gertrude from Hamlet, and Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby. Both of these characters are so in love with themselves that they seem not to care about others, or how their actions will affect them.
Daisy, for example, chooses to have an affair with Jay Gatsby, for her own personal indulgence. She doesn’t care how she makes Tom, or Gatsby feel. Even when Gatsby says, “I love you”, she says, “and I love the way you love me.” This obviously shows that Daisy is just toying with Gatsby’s emotions, and also shows that the only person she loves is herself. Finally, Daisy’s conduct results in the death of an innocent person. Daisy doesn’t stop the car she is driving to see if the person is all right, but keeps on going. Then, Gatsby takes the blame for the murder, and ends up getting killed for it.
Daisy doesn’t even go to Gatsby’s funeral; the man who, just days earlier had told Daisy that he loved her. However Daisy isn’t the only debauched woman in the book. Myrtle Wilson, the woman that Daisy killed, emulates Daisy in every way, except for wealth. We also find out that Jordan Baker, Nick’s love interest for the summer, is successful at golf because she cheats. The Dictionary defines frail as, morally weak. With that in mind, after reading this book, I couldn’t agree any more with the statement, “Frailty thy name is woman”!.
