The Home on Identity Street “Home is where the heart is.’ In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros develops this famous statement to depict what a “home’ really represents. What is a home? Is it a house with four walls and a roof, the neighborhood of kids while growing up, or a unique Cleaver household where everything is perfect and no problems arise? According to Cisneros, we all have our own home with which we identify; however, we cannot always go back to the environment we once considered our dwelling place. The home, which is characterized by who we are, and determined by how we view ourselves, is what makes every individual unique. A home is a personality, a depiction of who we are inside and how we grow through our life experiences. In her personal, Cisneros depicts Esperanza Cordero’s coming-of-age through a series of vignettes about her family, neighborhood, and personalized dreams. Although the novel does not follow a traditional chronological pattern, a story emerges, nevertheless, of Esperanza’s search to discover the meaning of her life and her personal identity.
The novel begins when the Cordero family moves into a new house, the first they have ever owned, on Mango Street in the Latino section of Chicago. Esperanza is disappointed by the “small and red’ house “with tight steps in front and bricks crumbling in places’ (5).
It is not at all the dream-house her parents had always talked about, nor is it the house on a hill that Esperanza vows to one day own for herself. Despite its location in a rough neighborhood and difficult lifestyle, Mango Street is the place with which she identifies at this time in her life.

While growing up on Mango Street, Esperanza is not only ashamed of her home, but is also uncomfortable with her outside appearance, which she feels does not convey the true personality hidden insider her. “I am an ugly daughter,’ she says. “I am the one nobody comes for’ (109).
She feels she can relate to the four skinny trees outside her window. “Four skinny trees with skinny necks and pointy elbows like mine’ (93).
Just as the trees survive under a harsh environment, Esperanza finds difficulty in accepting the neighborhood in which she lives.
She is very self-conscious about her name, whose mispronunciation by teachers and peers at school sounds ugly to her ears. She struggles with jealousy of her younger sister Nanny and cynically says that she “has pretty eyes and it’s easy to talk… if you are pretty’ (109).
Ashamed of most everything she identifies with, Esperanza is maturing with a very low perception of herself. She is not content with her home and surroundings, and cannot be until she is happy with her own character. The neighborhood is not exactly a pretty place as Esperanza describes it. She says, “here there is too much sadness and not enough sky.
Butterflies too are few and so are flowers and most things that are beautiful’ (39).
In the one year of Esperanza’s life that this book covers, she is raped, abused, and sees the death of the only person who would listen to her poetry- “Her name was Aunt Lupe and she was beautiful like [her] mother’ (70).
Her discontent with the neighborhood surrounding the house on Mango Street and the rough times that she experienced caused her to want to move away from the home. “One day I will pack my bags and say goodbye to Mango. I am too strong for her to keep me here forever.

Her determination is a depiction of her strong personality. As she searches, her character is in the process of forming into one that is strong-willed with a passion to succeed. In a way, all people are like Esperanza.
In the introduction, Cisneros writes, “You cannot forget who you are’ (xx), “you, the reader are Esperanza’ (xix).
Many people are discontented with what they have or where they live, or so they believe. They, in fact, are unhappy with who they are inside, unhappy with the things they identify with. A home is not just a simple building with walls and a roof; it symbolizes all that a person wants, believes, and perceives. Esperanza leaves her home on Mango Street because she believes the grass is greener on the other side; however, she is not content with her surroundings, and therefore not content with herself. All people have someplace that they call their home, whether it be loving or hateful, pretty or ugly, big or small.
It is in fact, their place of residency. But what does that house really mean to those people, or to Esperanza for that matter. As she grows, Esperanza realizes that their dwelling was, frankly, a dump. Mango Street is in a poor neighborhood where crime runs rapid, and she knows she wants more for her life. Her mind is flooded with dreams of a big mansion with the stereotypical white picket fence.
She says, “I had to have a house. A real house. But this isn’t it. The house on Mango Street isn’t it’ (6).
“I want a house on a hill like the ones with the gardens where Papa works’ (107).
She eventually leaves the town aspiring to become a writer.
She tells us that “they will not know I have gone away to come back. For the ones I left behind. For the ones who cannot out’ (134).
Once she leaves for another place, however, she will have established a new home, a new identity. When returning to Mango Street, the dilapidated house will no longer be home, but a former residency, a place where she lived while growing up.
She will have moved on with her life, and in a sense, could never go back “home’ to Mango Street. Home is where she had gone, where she had moved her heart. As Esperanza searches for her true identity and dreams of the home that she believes will make her happy, she does not realize that it all lies within herself. She will not find it until she looks inside to see that her identity is not what she has; it is who she is. A motivated Chicana who loves to write, Esperanza finds herself in the neighborhood which she dislikes. Mango Street is her home for now, and its essence effects her personality despite what she may want.

Just as Esperanza says in closing, “Mango says goodbye sometimes. She does not hold me with both arms. She sets me free’ (134).
Although Esperanza is constantly reaffirming that she wants to move away from Mango Street, we know by the end novel that she will one day return to help those who will not have the opportunities Esperanza has had in her life. Indeed, in the closing pages Esperanza admits that she cannot escape Mango Street. She can never again call it home, but it has influenced her dreams, formed her personality, and she has learned valuable life lessons from its inhabitants.
That is why, explains Esperanza, she tells stories about the house on Mango Street, revealing the beauty amidst dirty streets and unveiling her true inner self, the peace of knowing that her “home is where her heart is.’ 339.
