What do the names, Edward Cullen, Harry Potter, and Lisbeth Salander have in common? They are all main characters in the some of the most famous novels/series that were ever written. My family and friends were overly obsessed with these three different series, however, I thought different. While I read each one of these books I never felt as if I truly engaged, nor made a strong connection to the main characters to each book. I always hoped to find a series that I could attach too. I was about to give up hope, until one of my friends referred me to a new novel. Little did I know that this series was going to make my heart race on every flip of the page. “Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death. The Hunger Games have begun”. The specific series I am talking about is The Hunger Games Trilogy. After reading the three books: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mocking Jay, I can now say I have been completely inspired by a main character.
The main character in the series is a 16 year-old girl named, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss can be described as being a strong, complex, courageous, and also very vulnerable. Every time I flipped a page while reading the series I felt as if I created a special bond with Katniss. I believe that Katniss and I are mirror images of each other. Like Katniss, I had to be the leader and support my family at a young age. I had to compete to be the best athlete anyone has ever seen , and lastly, I had to choose between two boys who I had strong feelings for. Another reason why I got so interested in The Hunger Games series was the interesting setting of the series. The setting takes place in a far but unspecified time in the future, the nation of Panem has risen from the ashes of a post-apocalyptic North America. Panem’s seat of power is an authentic utopian city located in the Rocky Mountains called simply “The Capitol.” Outside of the Capitol, the nation is divided into twelve separate districts.
The Hunger Games Character Essay
The character that I felt strongly about from Suzanne Collins’ hit novel “The Hunger Games” was Katniss Everdeen, a rebellious and out-going teen who takes her sister’s place as tribute in the 74th annual Hunger Games. Throughout the novel, she displays important values that made me feel strongly about her. These include, her caring nature for others, Competitive attitude and her determined mind. ...
With the setting being properly developed, it really brought the novel to life and also attracted me to read more! According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the word “theme” can be described as, “The subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person’s thoughts, or an exhibition”. There are many themes in the Hunger Games trilogy. Each one of the specific themes is critical in the storyline of the series. Also all of the themes really expanded my knowledge on the difficulties they are having in Panem and also the certain difficulties we are having in our world today!. The specific themes from the book I am going to focus on are; power, society and class, and love. The main source of power in The Hunger Games is quite clear; the totalitarian government of the Capital read by their president—President Snow. Totalitarianism is a political system where the state recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life. The Capitol holds almost all of the country of Panem’s wealth, the governments power is dignified with their creation of The Hunger Games.
These games were created to show the 12 districts of the government’s power , and as well to warn them from creating a rebellion. Katniss stated in the book about how serious rebellion against the Capital truly was. “When I was younger, I scared my mother to death, the things I would blurt out about District 12, about the people who rule our country, Panem, from the far-off city called the Capitol. Eventually I understood this would only lead us to more trouble. So I learned to hold my tongue and to turn my features into an indifferent mask so that no one could ever read my thoughts”(Pg.).
The Essay on Dealing With Video Games’ Problems
In present-day society, with the Internet technologies developing rapidly, video games have assumed an increasingly crucial role in people’s lives. Admittedly, video games may attract lots of people, and gaming industry has achieved a good success. However, there are many problems with video games such as game addiction of China’s youth and the utilitarian behaviors of the game companies so that ...
In the Hunger Games, the citizens of Panem become nothing more than pawns in the capitals elaborate game of life or death. Since only one teenager from the ages of 12 to 18 or so called “tribute,” can win, the tributes are forced to kill teens from the other surrounding districts and one from their own district. It is all symbolic of how the Capitol prevents the people in the districts from joining forces and rebelling, the Games keep the people of the districts divided and fighting among themselves.
Worst of all, the government broadcasts the event television, reinforcing the idea that the tributes are giving their lives for little more than the entertainment of the Capitol. When I think of a totalitarian government one specific person comes to mind—Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler, of course, was responsible for the mass homicide of nearly six million Jews back in World War II. To think that a whole nation was ruled by a political system similar to Adolf Hitler is quite mind boggling. I feel as if this action is why I connected with the novel so quickly. In high school I was always intrigued about learning different political systems and how they all worked. I was deeply interested in learning about the different kind of dictatorships and how they strong affected a nation. The key theme when it comes to power in The Hunger Games, is when people have too much power, bad things happen. The next theme I want to focus on is the different societies and classes there are in this series.
As I stated before there are 12 separate districts in Panem. Each district provides something different to the capital. What each district brought to the capital are the following; District 1 was known for its industry of making luxury items for the capital. District 2 was known for creating tools. District 3 created technology for the capital. District 4 industry is fishing. District 5 industry is power. District 6 industry dealt with transportation. District 7 industry dealt with working with lumbar. District 8 principle industry is the production of textiles. District 9 industry is grain. District 10 industry is livestock. District 11 industry is agriculture, and lastly district 12 industry is coal mining. Katniss described the ranking of districts and how the Hunger games are truly perceived. “The exceptions are the kids from the wealthier districts, the volunteers, the ones who have been fed and trained throughout their lives for this moment.
The Essay on The Videogames Industry Video Game
The video game industry has become a huge influence on society and the economy today. It is an industry that is so huge that it is estimated that 70% of U. S homes will own a Video game system by the year 2005, (Cassandra, 2002) Just one year away. But what made it the way it is? Since it is still an industry it has to follow the natural laws of economics. In this paper we will dive into the ...
The tributes from 1, 2, and 4 traditionally have this look about them. It’s technically against the rules to train tributes before they reach the Capitol but it happens every year. In District 12, we call them the Career Tributes, or just the Careers. And like as not, the winner will be one of them”. (Pg.).
Katniss believed that tributes from district 1,2, and 4 were going to win the Hunger games because they had more opportunities from where they grew up. The tributes from these districts had everything given to them such as food, water and everyday essentials to survive, while Katniss and the other people from the other districts had to fight day by day to make ends meet and survive. I find this theme so interesting because today in our society I feel as if we are separated like the 12 different districts of Panem.
Our society is consisted on the of the people who can live quite easily and others who are barely living at all. It is quite sad to see people who work hard day in and day out and do something meaningful for society and not be rewarded, while the people who do not contribute to society at all live in wealth and do not have to worry about anything. Reading this novel really made me think how wealth can change how I see the world. The last theme I want to focus on is love. The Hunger Games goes into great detail with the concept of love with Katniss. Throughout the series Katniss is confronted with an internal conflict on choosing who to give her heart to, Gale or Peeta. This action is hard for Katniss because she is considered the girl who cannot love. Katniss has spent her whole life just trying to survive and because of that she does not get attached to people. This is the reason why I feel a bond with Katniss. For the longest time I would not allow myself to open up to others.
I felt if I kept everything inside I could not get hurt, but in all reality I was hurting myself by keeping those feelings inside of me. What this book has taught me about love is that it can be very mysterious, but if one always keeps it a mystery for too long one may never solve the mystery. Greasy Sae ( a minor character) said in Catching Fire , “You’ve got to go through it to get to the end of it.” (Pg).
The Essay on Pride and Prejudice: Shows How Two Different People Can Overcome Society
Pride and Prejudice In Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen show us how two very different people can overcome society, other people opinions and even their own first impressions to find love. I feel this quote greatly describes my journey reading The Hunger Games Trilogy. This series brought me full circle. I have never been so emotionally attached to a book before. Every time Katniss Everdeen heart raced my raced, every time she cried I cried. Katniss Everdeen is my heroine. They way she overcame every obstacle that was thrown in her way she overcame it and rose above it and I plan to be just like my new heroine.
