WHY IS EDUCATION VERY IMPORTANT IN OUR SOCIETY?
Education is very important in our society. In order to become a productive citizen it is essential
to have some type of education. Education goes beyond the typical idea of Math, Science,
English, History, etc. Education is learning values, morals, discipline, citizenship, survival skills,
trust, friendship, and much more. The idea of education has changed tremendously over time and
especially in the last few years. Education is not what it used to be and has shown to increase in
disheartening disappointment and the idea of failure. In the following piece I will discuss my
beliefs and values on education. I will also explain why my beliefs and ideas have been
transformed since I have been participating in credential courses. Finally I will share the goals I
have set for professional growth in my career as an engineer and how I plan to reach these goals.
Before I had the opportunity to take courses on engineering, I never fully grasped the
importance of education and the gaps that we have in our system. My first impression of
engineering, from an undergrad point of view, was just to study and get the work done.
Education, in my mind, was about books, studying, and mastering the subject. I never paid much
attention to the many other factors that make up education. My values and beliefs on education
From the beginning of time until the end of time, there will always be students who require special education services. Throughout the 20th century, there have been many laws written to try and protect and help students with disabilities. Two in particular are the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 1990). Special education ...
dramatically changed. Education was no longer just about books and passing the next test.
Education turned into social environments, personal growth, coping mechanisms, learning
discipline, special education obstacles, second language learning, standardized testing, politics,
money, hypocrisy, and impossible expectations. My simple point of view of education was
immediately thrown into the whirlwind of reality.
Many of my beliefs and values are backed up by what I have learned in my credential
classes. Many of my criticisms were formed by the inconsistency I saw from textbook ideals and
the reality of the classroom. I have come to believe that Education needs to go beyond the
standardized tests, universal expectations, and segregating of the schools. Education needs to be
able to reach the students on a level that they can grow and succeed. Education needs to allow the
lecturers to connect with their students and give them hope and motivation. Books, tests, and
rules are not going to create an educated population. The students need to be able to apply what
they have learned and become intelligent, morally stable, socially and economically successful.
Society and government regulations make it difficult for modern students to become successful. I
believe that it is difficult because our priorities on education are wrong and lecturers are not
preparing the students for the real world. We are focusing on statistics, tests, and money instead
of application, moral, and social growth.
Assignments on the internet and other computer programs are fun and a great learning tool. I
believe that the students should be able to feel that they are in a positive learning environment
where they feel that they can learn academically and socially. Lecturers have to follow the
guidelines for the standardized test and are not given the opportunity to teach accordingly to the
progress of the students. For example, the students are expected to take certain exams and the
lecturers must prepare the students for these exams. Many times these exams are difficult to pass
and the lecturers and students become frustrated.
I have many goals that I would like to accomplish before and after I become a
If there Ability Tracking Introduction If there is one general consensus among those who analyze America's system of education, it is that we are lacking somewhere. Whether it's in our inner-city schools, or rural districts, there is a distinct literacy dilemma that has yet to be resolved in our schools. Not only are we gravely behind other nations in our literacy rate and mathematics abilities, ...
credentialed engineer. I want to be an engineer that is not confirmed by the rules and hypocrisy in
the education system. Because I have many obstacles set before me, I want to be able to prepare
myself better as an engineer. I want to find a way to focus on group work, technology awareness,
and alternative testing method. It takes more than just studying and passing tests to be educated.
Interaction, group work, field work, and hands on technology allow students to learn and succeed.
The world is not perfect and that means education is not perfect too. I understand that
there will always be problems in the education system. I just hope that lecturers and
administrators do not be complacent with the faults in the system. It is their duty to be the voice
for the students and fight for what will help them to be better individuals in life. My beliefs,
values, and goals are important to me. I want to see a positive change in the education system and
I want to see more students succeed. I think it was Mahatma Gandhi who said ³our future is
determined by what we do today´.
