Chad Lamont Butler was born on December 29th, 1973 in Port Arthur, Texas. He is better known by his stage name Pimp C and one of the two founding members of the rap duo Underground Kings also known as UGK. Over the course of his twenty-year career in the music industry he became known for his love of selling and using drugs, along with his desire to pimp women which all can be heard in the lyrics of his music. Naturally, living such a demoralized lifestyle it caused him to have many run-ins with the law.
A depiction of his lifestyle can be heard through his verse on a song such as Leanin’ in which he is featured on fellow Houston, Texas rapper Slim Thug’s album Boss of all Bosses. He speaks of rising to fame off drug sales, which funded his music career, and if he ever stopped selling records he would then move into prostitution. He also pens in the verse how he chose to celebrate his success by using the prescription drug Promethazine and Codeine, which also goes by the street name Lean, Syrup or Purple Drank.
Pimp C was known in the music industry by other musicians and his fans for being a renowned lover of “Syrup”. Many mainstream artist that have created songs based on their love for the drug sought out Pimp C for a guest appearance on their album. Unfortunately, the abuse of this drug caused Pimp C to develop Sleep Apnea. On December 4th, 2007 in Los Angeles, California Pimp C was found dead in his hotel room from an apparent overdose. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office ruled his death an overdose “caused by respiratory depression due to an overdose of promethazine and codeine with a pre-existing history of sleep apnea”.
