“The New World” directed by Terrence Malik is a movie about the first explorers to the Americas. It is about the early settlers who first colonized in Jamestown, Virginia. The movie and the stories by John Smith are mainly about him and his men in the colonies. They express the views of John Smith and his story of the colonies in early times. The stories and the movie are about the same events and same people, but are conveyed in different ways. The movie doesn’t show the detail and factual events occurring as the book portrays.
The movie “The New World” has many similarities and differences versus the stories by John Smith. Some of the similarities in both the movie and the stories, John Smith was on an explorer’s ship on route to find a faster trade route to India. John Smith was a very important figure in the colonies, he was a great leader and one of the first colonists to successfully communicate and trade with the Natives. John Smith was portrayed as the ambassador of the Englishmen to the Natives. He started off as an explorer with the expedition and climbed in ranks to leader or president of the colony. John was and other colonists were left in the Americas to learn more about the land and Natives and build a colony for the English. In both the movie and the stories in the book these facts are the identical. John Smith makes contact with the Natives in hopes of trade and knowledge. He has a hard time in the beginning; they are perceived as invaders by the Natives and are not welcomed. John Smith eventually gets captured by the Natives and learns their ways. He shows them that he is there for a peaceful mission and is not there to capture their land or resources. Eventually the Natives accept John Smith and the colonist temporarily for trade.
The Essay on John Smith And Pocahontas A Disney Romance
It can be easily assumed that almost everyone has heard the tale of the American Indian princess, Pocahontas the narrative of a mysterious young girl who rescues an English explorer from death only to fall in love and win his affections in return. The colonist were having a hard time adapting to the Americas, they didn’t have resources and were dying of disease and famine. The Natives in kind gesture provided the colonist with clothing, fur, food, and other useful resources for them to survive in the new lands. John Smith recalls in both the stories and the movie that without the Natives help the colonist wouldn’t have survived the harsh conditions. Eventually more colonist arrive from England and bring more resources and help to contribute and build the colony. The Natives see the colonist as coming to their lands to settle and that diminishes the ties between the two parties. It is too late for the Natives; they are no match for English soldiers and weaponry. In both movie and stories this is the alike.
The differences between the movie “The New World” and the stories are also very evident. The movie had more to do with the love story between John Smith and Pocahontas. It conveyed the story between the Natives and the Colonist, but it was mainly about the relationship between the two and how their paths crossed. The movie expanded the idea more; Pocahontas and John Smith interlinked and became partners of the two different parties. John Smith was taught the ways of the Natives by Pocahontas and Pocahontas was taught the ways of the Colonists. The stories were different, because Pocahontas wasn’t portrayed as the main character interlinked between the two sides. John Smith took the Natives idol Okee captive and won their respect when he returned it. In the movie it was about Pocahontas showing him the way of the Natives and starting a relationship between the two sides because of her trust in him. In the movie she is main connection between the sides and everything that usually happens is because of her and John’s relationship. In the stories John Smith is very much respected by the Natives, they believe everything he says as if it were the king of England’s words. In the movie the King does not trust John Smith, and warns Pocahontas not to fall in love with him.
The Essay on John Smith Colonists Food Natives
The leadership strengths and weaknesses of John Smith evoked a profound effect on the Jamestown colony. The fact that Smith actually arrived in the colony as a common prisoner and was able to achieve the leadership role that he gained is amazing. His creativity and knowledge in certain areas actually saved the colonists from attack and starvation in the early days. Some of the rules he enforced as ...
The stories show more of a realistic view of the Natives, why they began to trade and why they began to accept the colonist because of John Smith. In the movie the colonist conspire a plan to kidnap Pocahontas to use against the Natives, John Smith doesn’t agree so he is removed from presidency role of the colonies. The removed him as the leader, because they suspected the relationship was misleading his judgment for the good of the colonist. There is no evidence at all of this in the stories; this was a plot in the movie to contribute to the storyline. John Smith was viewed as more of a lover and rogue in the movie, he was always more interested in what was going on with Pocahontas, instead of being the leading role in the colonies. In the stories he is credited as the man to turn the colonies from failing to succeeding. There were more details on things he did to help the colonies in the stories, he was always trading and finding new lands in the Americas.
