The One Minute Manager is a novel that each person should read, whether they are in a family, in a group of friends, or at the work place. Kenneth Blanchard, Ph.D and Spencer Johnson, M.D explain three basic principles that can be applied to everyday life. The three principles are one minute goals, one minute praising and one minute reprimands. Blanchard and Johnson believe that these three ideas will help simplify life, increase productivity, reduce stress and help the reader find peace of mind. One minute goals, one minute praising and one minute reprimands are ideas that if used effectively can help to increase ones success in life. One minute goals are the foundation on one minute management.
Each manager is expected to set realistic goals with their subordinate that are clear, concise and no longer then 250 words per page. The concept of 80/20 goal setting is that 80% of ones important results come from 20% of their goals. Only one minute goal setting is done on the 20% that are key areas of responsibility and each person keeps a copy of the goal so that periodically, progress can be assessed. Recently, the head office of Starbucks decided that they were going to implement an Individual Development program to encourage partners (employees) to set goals in the company for each quarter. In the Individual Development Program, store managers have to evaluate each partners performance and prepare a sheet indicating their strengths and weaknesses. As well, there is a section where partners have to set goals which will improve the working environment, and increase productivity. I plan to become a supervisor in the next year and my manager has laid out all the goals that I will need to achieve so that I will be eligible to receive a promotion.

The one minute manager is a short story which explains the three management procedures or techniques that a manager needs and can use to be the superlative manager that he can be. It begins with a man probing for an effective manager anywhere and everywhere throughout the world. He comes across many of these managers but they are either harsh or pleasant. These harsh managers have the company ...
The One minute praisings emphasize the need for people to be praised and recognized when they are doing something right. Managers are encouraged to tell their employees specifically that they are going to assess their performance immediately after the acts are made. They are also encouraged to express their contentment with the job getting done, promote them to do more of the same good work and shake hands or touch the person to show support. At Starbucks, there is a new company goal each quarter for each store; the current quarters goal is to increase pastry sales. Each district manager has incentive coupons; such as free movie tickets that are to be handed out to partners whenever they are caught suggestively selling a pastry. I think this type of motivation causes employees to care more about their work, encourages team efforts and cause workers to feel as though they are an asset to the organization. The one minute reprimand understands that people make mistakes and that these mistakes must be corrected. The one minute reprimand must be done immediately after the mistake and not left to linger.
The message conveyed must be clear and direct so that there is no confusion and a moment of awkward silence usually follows so that the managers discontentment is felt. During second half of the reprimand, the managers job is to ensure the employee of their value and their working potential, shake hands or touch to show that they support them and then realize that the reprimand is over. My mother practices this principle whenever I do something that displeases her. She sits me down and tells me right away that I was in the wrong; she also tells me specifically how she feels about what I did and gives me a few seconds to let it all sink in before she tells me that I am a good person and valuable to the family. After this, she does not bring it up again and wipes the slate clean so to speak. The concepts of one minute management are straightforward and simple, yet when trying to implement them, there are other factors that will influence success.

Many people may try to be one minute managers, but I highly doubt that a person could achieve maximum success like the people in the novel. Situations are constantly changing, and require people to make snap decisions, which are not always the most rational ones. I think that each person can take ideas from one minute managing, but I dont think that a person will ever be successful as a one minute manager..
