I read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, who at age 16 wrote this book. The book contains 156 very well written pages. The book would probably be placed in the adventure category. The book was written on things that S.E. Hinton experience in her life as a teenager.
Almost everything that occurs in this book happened to S.E. as a kid. Let me tell you a little more about this book. In this book the narrator is a boy named Ponyboy. Ponyboy is a fourteen year old living at home with his 2 older brothers. Ponys parents were killed in a car accident when Pony was a little boy.
Ponys hair is light-brown. He likes to wear it longer than most boys his age. His eyes are a greenish-gray color. Pony introduces himself in the book by stating he likes being alone. He enjoys going to the movies alone because he feels if he takes someone else it is like having someone read over his shoulder. In the book, Pony has many things that he states that are very thoughtful. He says at one time, that watching the sunset makes him feel safe and it makes him happy he lives here, but at the same time he wonders if the sunset looks the same to other people that dont have the same kind of life he has.
With everything he states, I conclude that Pony is a very thoughtful kid. This makes the story quite interesting for what goes on. The Outsiders takes place in a small town, probably 5,000 to 8,000 people in population. In the book, the setting sets the mood in one scene by having Ponyboy and his friend Johnny sitting in a park on a cold chilly night. The wind is howling and you get a sense that something is going to go wrong, which is exactly what happens. Pony and Johnny are jumped by a car-full of socs.

Action is triggered when the greasers and socs are about to have a rumble. The air is cold, and damp. The fight is staged in a vacant lot. Both sides feel the cops wont be called if they fight here. Because of this, the biggest fight in greaser-socs history occurs. A good example of a conflict being created by the setting is when Pony is explaining that the town is split into to sections.
The Westside, where the greasers live. It is the poor side of town. The other side is the Eastside, where all the socs live. It is considered the rich side of town. Just because of the money difference there is a major conflict. The socs think they are better than the greasers.
While the greasers think they are just as good, if not better than the socs. The Outsiders is a book about a group of guys who live on the poor side of town. On the other there is another group of guys who live in the big houses and have everything handed to them. These two groups are rival gangs because of the money difference. The poor boys are known as the greasers. The rich kids are known as socs. Each side gave the other these names.
The main conflict starts when Ponyboys best friend Johnny kills a member of the rival gang. Pony and Johnny flee in fear of being arrested for murder. The boys run to an abandoned church. They hide there for a week until Johnnys conscience catches up with him. One of the boys drops a cigarette on the wood floor before they go to lunch. When the boys return to pick up their stuff to leave, the church is on fire and there are kids in the church.
Johnny and Pony run in to save them. All the children get out with no injuries but Johnny had the roof clasped on him and it broke his back. He had severe burns all over his body. When the boys are taken to the hospital, Pony finds out that there is a giant rumble set for that night, socs vs. greasers to determine who would be in charge of everything. Both sides thought this would solve everything. Johnny died in the hospital and Dally, another kid in the gang was shot by the cops, did they realize the only way to stop all this was to quit the name calling, jumpings and everything else. The Outsiders is a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone.
The Review on Carson Book Ben Boys
The story is about a doctor who got into a lot of trouble when he was young. His mother is Sonya Carson who married at thirteen. The book has a great ending, great adventure, and just a great plot. I like how the author describes the setting in the book. It makes it a lot easier to picture in your brain. Its amazing all this happened to the author. I It is just an all around good book. I think I will enjoy reading it again just as much as I did this time.
