Throughout the story “The Pearl”, Steinbeck makes each event lead to another. Each event has its own cause and effect towards the protagonists of the story, Kino and Juana which is very significant to the plot of the story. All the major the events of the story create obstacles Kino and Juana must pass. These events create the main plot of the story and how it affects the protagonists.
The beginning of the story starts off by John Stein introducing the main characters of the story Kino, Juana and Coyotito in the small town of La Paz. Steinbeck crates the first obstacle Kino and Juana must overcome. Their only child Coyotito has been stung by a scorpion and Kino sets out for a pearl to pay for the child’s treatment. The climax of the story is when Kino is overwhelmed by what he can obtain with the miraculous pearl and is blinded from it, which results in Coyotito being shot by a bullet from the tracker. As the story concludes Kino returns to the village of La Paz realizing how he has been blinded by greed. The resolution of the story is when Kino throws the pearl into the ocean and looks back at what it has done to him and sees the harsh realities it has brought to himself and his family. Finally he comprehends the more important things in life such as family, health, and life itself.
The first cause and effect starts when Coyotito has been bitten by the scorpion and then Juana decides to take him to a doctor, which seems to be that she is asking too much for someone whom in living in a life of poverty. The doctor refuses to treat Coyotito because Kino and Juana cannot afford the fees. Juana prays indirectly to cure their son Coyotito by finding a pearl to pay for the treatment. Kino eventually “finds the pearl of the world” which will change their lives forever.

One morning, a morning that seemed like any other, Kino and his wife as usual got up and started breakfast. This wasn't like any other day though. Kino now tries to sell the pearl to the pearl buyers to receive money to pay for the doctor’s treatment. Finding the pearl begins to cause grief and unhappiness toward Kino and his family. This is true because during the night someone tries to steal the pearl therefore the pearl is obviously of great value.
The climax of the story begins to develop and shows how one event leads to another. Kino goes to sell the pearl to pay for Coyotito’s treatment but the pearl buyers’ claim that the pearl is “fools gold” and it is of no value. Kino is enraged with the fact that the pearl may be worth nothing and feels that he has been cheated. He then decides to go to the capital to sell the pearl. The pearl begins to change Kino’s life that in a way it causes him to become suspicious of everyone. When a man tries to steal the pearl from Kino, it results in Kino being able to kill a man for a material possession and begins to change him into a man driven by greed.
Kino is now a changed man from this event and now his only goal is to sell the pearl and see what riches he can obtain with the money from the pearl. Kino and Juana set off towards the capital, during their journey Kino senses that he is being followed by trackers and the fact that he is paranoid, he begins to think that they will try to steal the pearl and kill his family. Kino makes a decision to kill the trackers before they can kill himself and his family. To Kino’s demise his only child is Coyotito is shot by one of the trackers because he is mistaken for a coyote pup. This event brings immense grief towards Kino and Juana but Kino’s rage keeps him from the pain.
Kino now realises that there is no point in continuing his journey to the capital because his son is dead. He returns to the village of La Paz. Kino now sees how the pearl has changed him and how he was blinded by greed and now he has lost everything of importance to him. The resolution of the story is that Kino decides to toss the pearl back into the ocean and sees how man can overcome one obstacle but get lead to another blocking his path. All the events that that happened in the story slowly lead to Kino demise and shows that you must be content with what you have and concentrate on the more important things in life such as health, friends and family.
