Henri Matisse is a renowned and respected personality in the field of Art. He was a man of various skills and a devotee to the various mediums of art. He was the master behind great paintings like the “Creole Dancers” and the “The Snail”. He was also the man behind the masterful sculpture piece called “Jaguar Devouring a Hare”. He was an epitome of the artistic man; he was first a painter, then a sculptor, a draftsman, and also a great printmaker (“Matisse: Life and Painting”).
Printmaking is one of the fields of art done by Matisse that is not commonly seen in art exhibitions and galleries.
In line with this, the American Federation of Art will be holding a comprehensive exhibition of more than a hundred Matisse’ prints created between the years 1900 to 1951. It will be held in the Baltimore Museum of Art from October 25th of this year to the 3rd of January in the following year. The exhibit will be showcasing the works included in the remarkable collection of Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation, and the Baltimore Museum of Art’s very own. There will be representations of the various media that Matisse used in his printmaking; etchings, monotypes, aquatints, lithographs, and linocuts, as well as his two-color prints.
In addition, some of the books in which Matisse showed his artistry in printmaking, will also be included in the exhibit. Pieces like the Pasiphae, which he produced in 1944, and Poesies de Stephane Mallarme, done in 1932, which demonstrated the brilliance of the artist in arranging printed images will be part of the highlights of the event. The organizers will also provide a fully illustrated catalogue, which will carry an essay written by Jay Fisher, the Baltimore Museum of Art Senior Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs tackling Matisse’ use of printmaking throughout his career.
