The Role of the Department of Homeland Security The role of the Department of Homeland Security has become a subject of heated debates. The society has divided into two camps; while one group considers the Department of Homeland Security successfully copes with its mission, the other group asserts that some changes should be done to achieve more effective functioning, especially when faced a threat of terrorist attacks. The role of the Department of Homeland Security should obviously be redefined and subject to few changes, to strengthen the organizational capacity and overall U.S. defenses against the serious threats of possible terrorist attacks. The Department should also focus more on providing help for frontline officers, providing better warning information and enhanced access to the up-to-date federal watch lists (US Department of Homeland Securit).
Tightening border security along with protection of the most vulnerable targets should also become the issues of primary importance. The Department of Homeland Security should become more aggressive with the countrys border security, supporting and encouraging significant increases in the ranks of the Border Patrol, the Department of Homeland Security, consular officials, etc to secure the U.S. borders. Finally, the Department of Homeland Security should undertake more efforts to secure seaports (especially to enhance methods and procedures for screening for radiological and nuclear weapons and materials), and air cargo (Strengthening Domestic Defense).
