“The veterans are coming! The veterans are coming!” Edward F. Palm posted his article in September 2008. In Palm’s article, he think it’s good to know that after the soldiers come from war some of the veterans are ready for a post-secondary education by used the G.I. Bill education benefits in order to attend colleges or universities. Palm gives advice to teachers and staff from college and universities on how to treat veterans on campuses. Edward Palm uses personal stories and gives some advice that helps veterans feel confident when they go back to school. Also Palm makes readers believe his credibility by employing pathos and ethos appeal combined in sufficient evidence with friendly and proud tone that creates and affective argument. In fact, this society has started to change since his appeal published. Most parts of his appeals already become facts. I interviewed few people who are working right now at campus strongly supported this cheering discovery.
Edward Palm begins his emotional appeals describing how he feels for the first time since arriving on the Paris Island, summer, circa 1965( Paris island a US Marine base near Beau ford, South Carolina, that trains enlisted soldiers).
One situation was when the recruits got there they couldn’t talk freely to one another because a strict code of silence had been enforced. The recruits were only allowed to speak with their instructor, and even then. The two recruits from the Marines were glad to be going back home. “I’m glad I’m going to be out of here next week!” one of the recruits remarks, his voice echoing out from the bottom of the pot he was leaning into (Palm 956).
The Term Paper on Literary Appeal
Who is Henry David Thoreau? Why is his name blundered all over books, journals and blogspots on the World Wide Web? To answer this question entails brief reconnaissance of how he treats his life and how his astounding philosophical views change the “outlook” of the American life back then and how his ideas influenced the human mind machinations up until now. Henry David Thoreau also known as Henry ...
He appeals his emotions because after being in Paris Island the two recruits wanted to go home and get their education back because they knew that education or being in schools maybe the second chance to be better. This chance is given by The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 known informally as the G.I. Bill, was a law that provided a range of benefits for returning World War II veterans.
Palm opens his ethical appeals by analyzing what veterans can accomplish without being suspicious. For instance, it is good when they come back academically. The soldiers are highly motivated because they have access to the best education benefits available from the World War II GI bill ,an act of congress that provide support for veterans returning to civilian life. Such bills generally include scholarship support for vocational education, veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as any veteran who just manages to get discharge honorably, will get tuition, fees, books, and a living allowance. They will also be able to transfer their educational benefits to their spouses or children. “The GI Bill allowed for a massive expansion of economic opportunity and higher education. Three years after its enactment, veterans made up 49% of college admissions. In addition, millions of veterans were now able to receive home loans, something most would not have been able to do before serving in the military.” The fact is that more veterans were seeking higher education, thereby increasing their chances of finding work.
He closes his argument with ethical appeal by providing some advice on how we can make veterans feel trusted and simple. “The great majority of veteran students who feel mistrusted and misjudged will not act out violently; they will simply drop out” (Palm 959).
We really don’t want that to happened, we want veterans to feel equal and be treated normal for them to succeed and to prepare their future life without suffering. Palm asks,” How then should we view and treat today’s returning veterans? (Palm 959) Palm gives some advice based on himself and how he would like to be treated. “First, treat veterans as you would any other student”(Palm 959), veterans don’t want special attention or meetings, they want to be academically prepared for good, and get a certification. They have the capability to do it. Put in mind that eventually school policies require special attention on veterans. “Second, do not thank veterans you don’t know their service” (Palm 960), palm tries to tell us, if we don’t know the veteran very well, we should not thank him because we can put him in a spot and we don’t want them to remember the bad experiences they had when they served, so if we become friends with one, we should wait until the veteran feels comfortable to talk about it.”
The Homework on Schools: Education and Students
There have been many recent reports, and research studies about cheating among students in schools. There are many different versions of cheating: copying home work, looking at another individual’s test paper and plagiarizing. This serious issue affects many students throughout their education and should be dealt with. Cheating in schools, caused mainly by students’ fear of failure or their ...
Third, do not shy away from any political or social issues appropriate to your class” (Palm 960).
Expect good ideas and opinions from them because they can be good at defending their prejudices; furthermore they can collaborate or command.” Fourth, when it comes to what they did in the war, don’t ask; wait for them to decide if and when they want to tell” (Palm 960).
Veterans just prefer other veterans to listen to them because they had the same experience. “Finally, expect veterans to do well” (Palm 960).
Give veterans the opportunity to express themselves. Palm as an instructor expects veterans to be animate about education and we can help too by letting them feel free and accomplished. “My own adviser, for instance, upon learning that I had been in Vietnam, happened to assure me that he had been very much in favor of welcoming veterans to campus and that he felt we had “a lot to contribute.” His reassurance seemed gratuitous at the time. Vietnam veterans were facing a very different sort of suspicion”(Palm 958).
Palm is supporting veterans because they are facing a very different sort of suspicion.
Of course veterans already have support from the military if they suffered from stigma, change in behavior, socializing problems, etc, so they do not need more compassion from students and teachers at school. As Palm expected in his article, most university now all has Veterans organization on campus. For example here in East Los Angeles College, we got the Veterans Center Department which is dedicated to providing veterans and active military personnel with assistance to enroll in East Los Angeles College and obtain access to benefits and resources. After a short interview of school counselor, Jessica Peak, said: “Every staff at East Los Angeles College’s Veterans Center Department is committed to providing an environment where associate military persons may find commandership, connect with resources, and receive academic support.”
The Term Paper on Stress In College Students
College students all stress out about one situation/life generality or another. Some of these situations/life generalities are individuation, computer anxiety, ethnic and gender roles in student-athletes, and mathematics anxiety. There have been many studies looking at stress in college students. At one time or another, college students are forced to deal with a stressful situation. Stress, in ...
In protest of high tuition and other expensive costs at school, former ELAC student Esperanza Ortega went on to create The Hook-Up Resource Center in Montebello, which was started to help students in need and expanded to help veterans. In the ELAC campus newspaper, Ortega says: “The Hook-Up is part of an auxiliary with the disabled veterans and works close with the city of Montebello promoting good humanity.” Another friendly people working in the tutoring center, Randy Lee explained the current situation of The Learning Assistance Center, “Workshop program “Job for Veterans” helps those of a mature age attain employment in today’s job hunt.” According to the information above provided by those campus staff member, our school really made a great effect to help veterans studying and living nicely in school.
In conclusion, Palm wants teachers, staff, and students to make veterans feel part of them and not like they’re the suspicious people on university or colleges campuses. He want to make sure they can stay focused and accomplish their dreams by treating them normal and give them the opportunity to go back to school as an equal person and do just well as the other students. As Palm imaged, schools of today has been changed, most parts of his appeals already become facts. The feedbacks from interview strongly supported this cheering result. Life is going to be better and better just because many of us tried and keep doing those good stuff. Wish there won’t be any veterans living misery because we did not try to help.

should high school student work part-time?
Nowadays, there are more and more students work part-time job in their free time. Actually, a part-time job can provide money and working experience to them. But it partly disturbs their study as well. So the high school students should not be encouraged to have a part-time job because of the following reasons. Firstly, most high school students are too young to work. Specifically, they still lack ...
