Each one of us have a family, we all agree that it is the place we will feel warm and safe. So we tend to do all the best for our family also to protect the happiness and the honor of the family. However, sometimes you have to decide to select between the benefit of your family and yours. It may seem not really hard if you live in the modern world, but back to the sixteenth century France, according to the novel “The wife of Martin Guerre” which was written by Janet Lewis. Under the feudal system, the word “family” holds one of the most important places. However, Bertrande seemed to go against with this feudal rule by taking the course, and the judgment she got for her final choice, which was not satisfactory.
The Guerre family was not the real family of Bertrande, she was not born and grew up there but she has to been there for the whole life after she married Martin. Bertrande took the Guerre family as her own family, she worked her best in the household and the farm even her husband left her for eight years and it was not because of her fault. Why did she still live in the Guerre family? It because she wanted to keep the honor and the happiness of this feudal family. However, when Bertrande decided to take the course to prove the identity of the head of the house, she was claimed that what she had done was destroyed the prosper also the happiness of the whole family. Bertrande didn’t do it for herself, all she wanted to do was to find the real head of the family, the real father for San xi, the real husband for herself.

As the first part of the novel we could see that the real Martin was a rugged and severe man while the imposter Arnaud du Till was a kind and gentle man. So why should Bertrande tried to take him away from her life? Bertrande was not selfish when she chose to take the course, it has done for the benefit of the whole village included the Guerre family. There for Bertrande final decision after she been through the struggle between love and hate was suitable with the morality.
