Theodore Roosevelt In His First Administration Theodore Roosevelt was declared the twenty-sixth president of the United States just before the age of forty-three. Making him the youngest president in our nations history. He would keep all of the members in former president McKinley’s cabinet and wanted to keep the same policies as McKinley. He had too much originality to follow someone else’s plans instead of designing his own. The Panama Canal was started in his First Administration as president and was completed when he had begun his second. Roosevelt persuaded congress to approve building 10 battleships and 4 armored cruisers for the U. S. Navy. He believed that having a larger fleet would help the nation in international affairs and that they would need to switch across from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans regularly.

There was an Alaska boundary dispute while Roosevelt was in his First Administration, which was when Canada claimed a line deciding where the Alaska boundary began when gold was discovered in the Klondike. The reason Canada claimed a certain line was that it was located in a place that was only access able through Canada, which would boost Canada’s economy greatly due to the spending of many miners.
Juries from both countries were set to settle this dispute and the land was granted to the United States. Roosevelt was also known as a conservationist because of his achievements in expanding national parks, and establishing in 1905, the United States Forest Service. He set aside 18 sites as national monuments in his attempts to preserve wildlife. He created the first 51 federal bird reservations as well as the first four national game preserves.
Life in the White House was always chaotic, as his children and friends would come to be known as the “White House Gang.” He sometimes joined his children in there games.
