In Is the American Dream Over, Cal Thomas elaborates on the article previously published by Bob Herbert, Hiding from Reality. In Thomas’ article he habitually blames the liberals for the government’s decline. He frequently directs attacks right into the faces of all of his readers, whether liberal or conservative. His stance is not only completely biased, but it is offensive to the liberal audience. Thomas’ piece is composed of stabs at liberals for ruining the economy, letting the government get out of control, and completely desensitizing our country to the idea of the American dream.
I firmly believe that political parties have nothing to do with the demise of our economy. First off, Cal Thomas frequently states in some way or another that “The Liberals among them and their policies are leading us down a path to economic and cultural insolvency” (p. 569).
By directing this attack specifically at the liberal community of America he has not only narrowed his audience who will actually take a valuable message from his article, he has insulted the majority of the younger generation of the United States.
It is no secret that the 90’s generation and beyond are going to have a more liberal stance on the issues facing the country just because that is the world we have grown up in. My generation has been taught to think freely and keep an open mind about different issues. I, myself, believe that conservative individuals do the exact opposite. In my experience, the most closed-minded and infuriating people that I have met have all been of the conservative party.

It is common knowledge that people of the conservative persuasion are usually set in their ways that they have known to love just because they are not open to change. And, at age 19, I know for a fact that the world will not get anywhere and changes will not be made until every single American opens their mind to new ideas and new concepts, whether liberal or conservative. Secondly, Thomas states that “The creation of a government that is out of control, and thus out of touch robs every citizen, preventing fulfillment of the original American dream” (p. 569).
I believe that the creation of said government is not the fault of one person, nor is it the fault of one specific political party. It is the fault of the American government as a collective body. With such a large country, that is the premiere country in the world, you cannot blame a singular person or group of people for what has been brought forth and contributed to by the populous of past generations as well as present. Finally, the so called American dream should be up to the person who is living it.
Cal Thomas says in his article “The rules for achieving the American dream” (p. 70), what rules? I certainly did not know there were certain rules you had to follow in order to live the life you want to live. Thomas says “The rules are known to previous generations: studying and staying in school; achieving at least an undergraduate degree; avoiding drugs that can harm your mind and body; getting married before you have children… (etc. )” (p. 570).
I believe that the American dream should be whatever the dreamer wants it to be. Whether that is fame and fortune, being a drug dealer, or like myself being an English teacher.
There are many forms that the American dream can come in. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I do not believe you can put a finite definition on what the American dream is or should be. In conclusion, I overall strongly disagreed with Cal Thomas’ accusations and digs at the liberals for bringing our country down. It is the fault of the entire nation as a hole. And as for the American dream, you make your own dreams become a reality. Your American dream is entirely up to you and how you choose to live your life.
