Josh PelzThe conflicts of the thirty years warSunday May 30, 1999 The thirty years war was inevitable because of the unusually high amount of causes that went in to starting the war. The war began as a civil war and became a struggle for territory and political power. The four main causes of the war were religion, economic, territorial and social. The main countries that were involved were, England, Germany, Spain and Austria. The event that actually marked the beginning of the thirty years war Defenstraton of Prague. The thirty years war was really not just one war but it was many smaller wars. Religion played such a big part in the war because that is how the countries were split up. England and Germany were protestant and that was the major reason that they were allies. England was ruled by James I who was Protestant and Germany was ruled by Fredrick V. Although Germany claimed to be a state that allowed freedom of religion that was not completely true. Although Germany did have a small section of Catholics it was not completely by choice. Germany went under the saying cuius regio, eius religio this meant that the ruler of a certain area had the right to pick the religion of that area and if the people did not like this they could move.
One of the major factors in Germany was the hostility between the Catholics and the Protestants. They disagreed over the Peace of Augsburg. This peace was written in 1555 and was supposed to settle any question about the religions in Germany. The problem with this is that it did not recognize Calvinists and there was a large population of Calvinists in Germany. Well both parties violated the piece and not just the Calvinists. The other side of the war is the Catholic side. This was Spain and Austria. The Habsburg s ruled both Spain and Austria. Since the same family ruled them both they had a natural alliance. Also the small but significant Calvinist section of Germany was allied with them.
