Thomas Hobbes Thomas Hobbes was born in London in the year of 1588. He went to the college of Oxford University in England, where he studied classics. Hobbes traveled to many other European countries to meet with scientists and to study different forms of government. During his time outside of England Hobbes became interested in why people allowed themselves to be ruled and what would be the best form of government for England. In 1651, Hobbes wrote his most famous work, called Leviathan.
In it, he argued that people were naturally wicked and could not be trusted to govern. Hobbes believed that an absolute monarchy-a government that gave power to a king or queen was the best way to go. Hobbes was a man who knew his beliefs. He also felt that nations, like people were selfishly motivated.
To Hobbes, each country was in constant battle for power and wealth. That is why he wrote the book; “If men are naturally in a state of war, why do they always carry arms and why do they have keys to lock their doors?” (1651) Governments were created to protect people from their own selfishness and evil, stated Hobbes. Hobbes was influenced by two developments of his time. One was the new system of physics that Gaelic and others were working out. From this Hobbes concluded that only matter exists and that everything that happens can be predicted in accordance with exact scientific laws. The second great in – fluence was the English Civil War.
People he stated are selfish. Hobbes was a good man and knew exactly where he was headed and knew exactly what he believed.
