Thomas Watson was born on the 15 th November 1958, in Bang our Hospital, which was in Bathgate. He grew up in a small village called Breich, near West Calder, with his mother Sarah, and his father, Thomas. As a child, Thomas attended Wood muir primary school, which was one of the smallest schools in the area, with only forty pupils and two classrooms. He went on to West Calder High School, but left after fourth year with no qualifications at all. When he was sixteen years old he became an apprentice spray-painter, but decided after six months to become an apprentice engineer. After these two apprenticeships he went on to join the army.
He was in the First Battalion of the of the Royal Scots and served four years. He started off doing basic training at Glencoure and then moved to the First Battalion Munster in Germany, where he stayed for two years. During this time he joined the regiment football team and pipe band and so was able to travel all over Europe. He then moved back to Edinburgh and spent some time as a Royal Guard, as well as a palace guard at Holyrood and a castle guard at Edinburgh Castle. Thomas also played the tenner drums in the 1979 Berlin Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle. Near the end of his army career he went on a four month tour of Ireland in West Belfast, which was the time he liked least.
While he was in the army his dad divorced his mum and they have hardly spoken since. On the 3 rd September 1982, when Thomas was twenty-three years old he married Lynda For gie who was a student nurse from Forth, a small town near Breich. Two years later when their first daughter helen was born, he became a Prison Warden in shots prison, but transferred to Peterhead prison about a year later just before his second daughter, andrea, was born on the 2 nd of October 1985. During his time in Peterhead he was involved in many riots, which made him decide to transfer again to Polmont in 1989 just after his third daughter Jean was born, five years after Heather. In Polmont he decided to become a chef within the prison service.
