Through my eyes, a ferris wheel use to be just another ride. Now it’s a death machine that suspends you in mid air as you hang on for dear life. Whenever I get on a ferris wheel, I’m terrified. My breathing slows down and my heart starts beating fast. I find it hard to focus. Everytime I look down I can’t see the bottom. Once I’m on it, there is no way to stop and ask for anyone’s aid. I’ve had a few bad experiences with ferris wheels.
It all started when I was 6 years old. My family took us to an amusement park called the Magic Forest. It was a rainy day, but we still went on the rides and had a lot of fun. My little brother and I begged my mom if we could go on the ferris wheel. She said no and when my dad asked why, she said that cart number 118 would start swinging back and forth. At first we were disappointed that we couldn’t go on the ride. Instead we sat back and watched as the wheel circuited around. As I looked up, I could see the rain dripping off from the top of the tree pines. I looked past the ferris wheel into the parking lot and saw a gigantic Uncle Sam statue standing tall and proud. As we watched the wheel descend from the top, to our disbelief cart number 118 start swinging out of control. I could see the rain droplets dashing off the the bottom of the cart. Everyone was in shock. Thankfully, the workers got everyone off and nobody was hurt.
On my 7th grade class trip, my friends and I decided to go on the ferris wheel. As we waited in line, we started joking around saying that we would get stuck at the top. We got into the cart and stopped near the top like it usually does, but with a screeching halt. Hanging in suspense, I looked down to see that 5 people are surrounded at the controls and shout up at us “You’ll be down in a few minutes”. After 20 minutes went by, we started panicing. One of my friends start screaming at the top of her lungs, “We’re gonna die! We’re gonna die! We’re gonna starve to death!” At that moment, my friend Kelsey revealed some Nutrigrain Bars out of her bag and said, “We’re not going to die, I have food!”. A few minutes went by. I turned around and looked down at the sun beaten path that others were walking on. I could see some people from my class walking around freely, while my friends and I were marooned on the top of an inoperable ride! Each time a minute went by, the next minute would feel even more sluggish than the last. Since it was windy outside, everytime the wind blew I could hear the cart screech. We watched ourselves as we saw each other’s vulnerability to just fall out of the cart. Finally after about an hour, the controls started working again and the workers got us down. I promised myself I would never go on a ferris wheel again.

But then a few summers ago, my aunt took me to Hershey Park. As I walked down the paved pathway, going past the Hat Shop, past the trees, and next to the Carousel lied the ferris wheel. My cousin Hillary asked me to go on with her. I figured I would be brave and face my fears of going on the ferris wheel. However, this was no ordinary ferris wheel. It was called “The Giant”, a ride that was like a balance and at each end was a ferris wheel. When one ferris wheel went up, another went down. You could also spin your own cart. Hillary and I got in the cart. We ascended towards the top and I was feeling alright. As I looked down, I saw all of the rides and shops. Sometimes I could even get a whiff of an aroma of chocolate going by. I felt calm so we started spinning. After a few times, it got a little too intense for me. Hillary and I tried to stop the cart, but it wouldn’t stop rotating around and around. We tried and tried, but nothing worked. As the cart continued doing pirouettes, I sank down towards the floor. Dangling in mid air, we kept spinning and spinning. It felt like an eternity going by. When we got to the ground, the workers told us just to jump off. We did and I was so thankful that the frenzy was all over.

It was about two years before I went on a ferris wheel again. It was this past summer on my little sister Tessa’s 4th birthday. She went to a little amusement park and after going on the Tilt-O-Whirl, she wanted to go on the ride I dreaded most, the ferris wheel. She asked if she could go on it. Being fearful, I told her she was too little. Then she looked up at me with her gleaming big blue eyes and said, “Pleeeeeeease! It’s my birthday and I’m a big 4 year old now!” Not having the heart to say no, I took her on. After we were buckled in, I grabbed onto her so tightly. Innocently, she pinky swore me that it was gonna be alright. I laughed and held her close. I closed my eyes the entire time. When I finally opened them, I saw that the ride was almost complete. My anxiety was over. When we got off the ride, Tessa ran up to me in her little pink outfit and hugged me. She looked up with an effervescent smile and said, “Katie, that was so much fun!” Even though I didn’t want to go on the ride, I did it for my sister. Even though to me it was a fearful journey, through a child’s eyes it was only pure joy.
