During the south in the 1930s, life was horrible. It was time of the Great Depression where countries like the United States were hit hard. It was a severe worldwide economic depression leading to World War II. It originated from a dramatic fall in stock prices in the US with a major stock market crash. The Great Depression had devastating effects to many peoples’ lives both rich and poor in the US, especially in the South. Because of the great economic can decline, many people lost their jobs. Farming and other rural areas also suffered as crop prices fell. Life was very hard during the 1930s. Since many people didn’t have jobs, it was hard to survive and buy food to feed the family. Poverty was a big problem in the US especially during the Great Depression. In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird”, it was a story that happened during the 1930s that tells us how peoples were very poor and how hard it was for them to survive. For example in Chapter 1 of the book, Scout being the narrator explains how her town Maycomb was a tired old town, where nothing happened much.
She quoted: “People were moving slowly then, there was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with…” This explains how people had nowhere to go and had hardly any money at all to buy stuff they liked. Another example was in 17 where Scout as narrator talks about the Ewell’s live as a example of poverty. She says: “Maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin…” This quote tells us how poor they were that the Ewells had to live behind the town’s garbage dump because they could afford a house to live in. It is very sad to see how people struggled to survive in the South during the 1930s. Another example from the text was when they talked about the Cunninghams. The Cunninghams were so poor that they couldn’t afford shoes for their children, so they had to walk barefoot everyday.

The Great Depression wasn’t the only problem during the time period in “To Kill A Mockingbird”, there were also other major problems including social racial inequality. The author Harper Lee wrote her book during a very tense time racially in her home state of Alabama. By placing her novel in the 1930s, Lee provided her readers with a historical background for current events of the time, and in doing so she exposed the deeply rooted history of the civil rights struggle in the South. During the 1930s, the South was still segregated, where the black people separated from the whites. Racism was a big factor in the story that lead to the socio-political beliefs of the time that would allow for the events that lead to Tom Robinson’s fate. As we all know, back then the whites thought that they were the best and most superior of all that hated the African Americans in almost every aspect of society.
When Tom Robinson was convicted of rape, he was sent to trial in court. But who knew that Atticus, a white man, would be the one standing up for him in trial. In the book, Atticus is a great person who is one of the few to commit to racial equality and defends Tom. He believes that everyone should be equal and not be judged by there color. But the white men didn’t believe this and when the time came to announce if he guilty or not, he was pronounce guilty of rape. To me it wasn’t fair, because we all know that he didn’t do it even the white men knew, but they still pronounced him guilty because he was a black man and is different from them. They did this because of power and pride. In addition to racial inequality, gender inequality also reigned, and women were not given equal rights. Women in the South were expected to be delicate and dainty, concepts that Scout abhors; and women were not allowed to serve on juries in Maycomb, according to the novel.
In conclusion, there were many problems in the South during the 1930s such as social and racial inequality, racism, and many more. These socio-political beliefs of the time led to Tom Robinson’s death at the end which was very sad. Of course, racism should come to an end, as the civil rights movements begins to spark during the 1950 of Rosa Parks and the great Martin Luther King Jr.
