The story To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee describes people as mockingbirds. Mockingbirds are peaceful, harmless, emotional, and always tries to make the world better. “’Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy’” (90).

Atticus, Boo, and Tom Robinson are mockingbirds in their own ways.
Tom Robinson is one of the few mockingbirds in this story. All he wants is to brighten the world. Every time Mayella asks him to come inside and do some chores for her he will set aside his work to help her. Tom did this because he wants to make the world better by helping Mayella with her chores. He always did everything that Mayella asks him free of charge. “She give me the hatchet and I broke up the chiffarobe. She said, ’I reckon I’ll have to give you a nickel, won’t I?’ an’ I said, ‘No ma’am, there ain’t no charge’” (191).
Tom did everything Mayella asks for free. He is a victim even though he did nothing wrong. Tom is kept in jail, because the Ewells accused him of raping Mayella. Bob Ewell said Tom did this so he would be looked up to as a hero, but he is proved a liar. He is shot and killed for doing nothing wrong. At the end Bob wins because of racism and Tom died for no reason.“Oh yes, the guards called to him to stop. They fired a few shots in the air, then to kill” (235).
He escaped at exercising period and tried to climb over the fence, but ended up being shot. Tom is a mockingbird, because he is a victim and innocent.

Boo Radley is also a mockingbird in this story. He’s enduring and also peaceful. Boo decides to stay in his house and not come out for years. Boo knows outside, racism is still there that’s why he stayed inside instead. He also endured all those hurtful jokes about him that Miss Stephanie Crawford manages to come up with. Since Boo almost never came out, people started to make up stuff that they thought might have happened to him. “Maybe he died and they stuffed him up the chimney” (43).
Scout told Miss Maudie what Miss Stephanie Crawford told her, and all the other nasty things she said about Boo. Boo is someone that wants to make the world a better place. He protected the kids when no one else is around, and also brought Jem back home after he was hurt and attacked. He brought Jem back after Jem injured his arm. Boo killed Bob Ewell and did Maycomb a favor, because he’s a liar that got Tom killed for no reason. He came out and killed Bob Ewell when Bob was harming the kids when they were walking home. “Let the dead bury the dead this time, Mr. Finch. Let the dead bury the dead” (276).
Mr. Tate and Atticus is deciding who killed Bob Ewell, “Atticus proposed that Jem stabbed him, but Mr. Tate said Bob fell on his own knife. Boo is a person that never harms anyone, but also tries to make the world a better place.
Atticus is the last mockingbird. He is naive, and enduring. When he went to a trial with Tom Robinson, he’s almost sure that Tom will be a free man and everyone will listen to reason, but they lost. Atticus is being naïve, and thinks that people will treat different races the same, but he was wrong. Few days later, Bob Ewell came up to him and spat in his face, Atticus didn’t fight back he stood there and let Bob take his anger out on him. Atticus did this so Bob can take out all his anger on him instead on this children, he also endured Bob’s threat to him. “So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take” (218).
Atticus is explaining to Scout and Jem why he stood there and took Bob’s threat. He wants to make the world better. The reason he stood up for Tom Robinson at the trial is because he believes black people shouldn’t be treated unfairly. He wants to get rid of racism and make the world better for everyone, even the colored. He also protected Tom Robinson when he was in jail. A mob of people came and Atticus and his kids brought the mob to their senses. If Atticus and his kids were to stand up for Tom, he would have been killed that night. Atticus wants to give the colored people a chance to be treated fairly. “’So it took an eight-year-old child to bring ‘em to their senses, didn’t it?’ said Atticus. ‘That proves something – that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still human.’” (157).

Atticus is explaining to Scout that even a children in your years can bring people to their senses, bring a wild group of animals back to earth. Atticus never caused trouble to the town, just like mockingbirds.
Atticus, Tom, and Boo are all like mockingbirds in the story. They didn’t do anything to harm people, and yet they’re victims. This is just like how life is things just don’t turn out the way you want them to. Life is always unfair, and people will be discriminated. Mockingbirds can be lots of people in life such as Martin Luther King Jr., and Abraham Lincoln, they all tried to make the world a better place for us.
