Opposites AttractIt’s always been said: You can’t choose the one you love. A typical Friday night for a fourteen year old girl and I was headed to mall with my best friend Kim. It’s just a regular trip to the mall for me, just to hang out with some friends and catch a movie. My friend Kim and I get to the mall where she was going to meet her boyfriend Tod. I was supposed to be meeting my ‘boyfriend” there too, but he couldn’t make it there that night. So Kim and I were hanging out shopping, talking girl talk and just walking around waiting for Tod to come.
Then we finally met up with him and he tells us that he brought some friends with him so we went to meet them. On the way we ran into two girls we knew from school and they were with two of Tod friends who they just happened to have met walking through the mall. So everyone was pretty much coupled up, except me. After talking and walking around some more we headed to the arcade. In the arcade I ran into another one of Tod friends, who I hadn’t seen before, he knew who I was because I was with Kim.
So he came up to me and asked ‘Am I supposed to talk to you,” meaning was he supposed to be trying to hook up with me. Now I took one look at this boy and I thought ‘Oh God no!’ He was so not my type, he looked like a rough-neck to me. He was the typical bad boy and I was the girl next door, needless to say we were complete opposites of each other. Also at that point in my life I was just a little superficial and looks meant everything to me. I didn’t think he was cute at all, and I wasn’t interested in talking to him.

So I simply said ‘I don’t know’ and walked away as fast as could. But then Kim tells me the soul purpose of Tod bringing him to the mall was to meet me and I thought to myself ‘you ” re kidding right?’ So not wanting to be rude I agreed to talk to him. Now I and this boy never really spoke another word to each other. But Kim being my best friend filled me in on all she knew about him from Tod. His name was Matt, he was fifteen years old, from Newark New Jersey and he was spending the summer in Pennslayvania with Tod, the basics. So we go into the movies and I remember we saw The Fast and the Furious.
I sat in the middle with Matt on one side and Tod and Kim on the other. As we sat through the movie I could feel Melvin and I getting closer without even speaking to each other. We were just sitting there and he had his hand on my knee, at first I thought he was moving a little fast for someone I just met and never really spoke to. But then on the other hand I felt comfortable and that helped me to relax, we were forming this kind of bond. After the movie we were all outside waiting for our rides to come and pick us up. It had gotten really cold for a summer night and I only had a light jacket.
Matt who had became so interested in me in just our short period of time together, offered to keep me warm. We stood outside for a while and he held me in his arms, it was the sweetest thing to me coming from a stranger. As my ride came I walked away from him that night feeling something I really wasn’t expecting, it was new to me. I wouldn’t call it love at first sight because when I first saw him I wasn’t the least bit interest. Also the fact that I went to the mall with someone else on my heart and not looking for a replacement, at first counted against him. Matt and I developed a very strong relationship, we dated for two and a half years after that and to this day are still very close to each other.
