Would you ever think that the late Saturday Night Live comedian, Chris Farley would have anything in common with Hamlet? One of Farley’s characters in the movie, “Tommy Boy,” is similar in many ways to Hamlet, in William Shakespeare’s play, “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.” Farley’s character in “Tommy Boy”, Tommy Callahan, and Hamlet are similar in ways such as, their relatives take over the positions of their fathers’ after the deaths of their fathers, must fight to get position back, and they are betrayed by their family.
First, Tommy Callahan and Hamlet had fathers that passed away. In Tommy Boy, Tom Callahan, Sr. had a heart attack while dancing with his son, during his own wedding. Then, his newly widowed wife took over the company with her son. Likewise, in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the king of Denmark dies and the kingdoms left to his widowed wife. Then, Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius marries Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Therefore, Claudius becomes king of Denmark. Which is like the taking over of the company.
Next, Hamlet and Tommy both have to fight to do what is right. Hamlet is forced to kill his uncle. However, it was the right act to commit. As compared to Tommy, who did not even realize that his stepmother and stepbrother were betraying him. Tommy must sell a large amount of the company’s auto parts or his stepmother will sell the business to his rival auto parts company. Tommy and Hamlet both fight as well as they can to save what they love. Whether it is Hamlet fighting for the people of Denmark, or Tommy fighting for all the employees at the auto parts factory.

Finally, Hamlet and Tommy are betrayed by their families. Hamlet is betrayed by his mother and uncle because they took over the country of Denmark when it was Hamlet’s day in the sun. Not only did Hamlet have to suffer the passing of his father and the marriage of his mother and uncle, but also he could not even claim the throne that he so rightfully deserved. Tommy’s step mother and step brother turn out to be con artists who are actually married, so the marriage to his mother was void and Tommy got to keep the company. On the other hand, Hamlet has to kill his stepfather and then is assassinated himself in Shakespeare’s tragedy.
In conclusion, there is a surprising similarity of Chris Farley’s character in “Tommy Boy” and Hamlet. Hamlet and Tommy Callahan are similar in many ways including, the take over of their father’s position after their demise, they must fight to try to regain the power, and they are betrayed by their families. The next time that you read Hamlet or watch a Chris Farley movie, you cannot help to think that they are similar.
