(Greiling, 2001) A. Although the events of September 11 have affected all of us in one way or another, the tourism industry was hardest hit.
1. The tourism industry has been devastated in the past two months, losing an overall combined 20 billion dollars.
2. Tourism accounts for roughly over 33% of America?s Gross National Product. (Washburg, 2001 New York Times) a. So as one can see through these numbers tourism is a big part of America?s economy and stability.
B. The sudden decline in the industry has had a very big and negative impact on businesses across the country, as well as the economy as a whole, which can been seen in the sudden huge layoffs experienced by most major companies around the country like Microsoft, Boeing, and Ford.

Technically to have a true recession there needs to be two consecutive quarters of economic decline, we have already had one quarter of decline and after what happened in September it looks like we are headed for a true recession. (Marat Egyan, 2001) A. Our country hasn?t experienced a recession in over a decade, and with a recession every American is affected in a negative adverse way.

a. He had the Fed cut the interest rate by a half of a percent, which is a big deal in the economic world.
b. He testified in front of congress explaining the real need to help out the tourist industry, including the airlines, railroads, and ocean cruises.
c. And he has also traveled ten times across the country in the past two months, flying on domestic airlines to show his support of the economy and the tourist industry.
C. There has been major concern that the entire tourist industry of America will collapse.
1. The airline industry just recently asked congress for a two billion dollar bail out, considering there huge loses, along with the other parts of the industry asking congress for a combined 1.5 billion dollars.
b. There has only been one successful government bailout in the history of our country, which was the bailout of Chrysler the car company during the depression. (Sandra, 1998) 1a. Ironically when the government issued the bailout during the depression it wasn?t even originally suppose to help Chrysler.
1. The airlines are only part of the tourist industry, with the other major parts being ocean cruises, rail travel, hotels, and resorts.
a. Travel by railroad has almost completely ceased since September 11, not to mention overseas cruises, combining for a 70% decrease in business in less than a month.
2. Hotels and resorts around the country were also hit hard by the recent events.
a. Hotels and resorts reported a 57% decrease in their earnings for the month of October with the worst yet to come. (CNN.com) b Taken from the New York Times is quote a New York hotel employee was quoted as saying, ?Our hotel has been so empty that each employee could have had fifty rooms to himself, with the rest of the rooms being occupied by victims of the attack who aren?t even paying.? D. Even just one of the listed components of the tourist industry having troubles can have an affect on the economy, yet in the near future we might have to deal with all of them potentially crashing at once.

A. There are many things all of us can do to help the industry and economy, it is just a matter of getting out and doing them.
B. According to an investigation done by the FBI in October it is now safer to fly on a plane than ever before.
a. One is more likely to die getting attacked and killed by an escaped 300-pound pig than getting killed while traveling in an airplane.
b. Another interesting fact is that if you flew on a domestic flight everyday of the year you could fly 25,000 days or over 68 years and not experience one catastrophic event on a plane.
c. Which goes to prove the point that air travel is still the safest mode of transportation.
C. You still might be wondering what you can do to help the economy and travel industry so here is your answer.
a. First travel as much as you can during the next six months and especially
around this holiday time.
1a. If you do decide you want to travel and really don?t know where to go New York is probably the best place you can go in order to help out the economy and tourist industry, not surprisingly because New York was hardest hit and has already begun to feel the affects of a recession.
b. Second if and when you travel fly in an airplane to get to where you are going.
c. And finally when you reach the spot that you?ve always wanted to visit in the United States stay in a hotel while you are there.
D. Now that you know what you can do to help the travel industry, here are some things that might happen if you don?t help.

So during the next six months take that long awaited vacation, take some time off from school and visit family, or simply go to Grandma?s in California and make an unexpected visit the day before Christmas, but whatever you do make sure you remember the following; a. Flying now is safer than ever before.
b. The tourist industry needs everyone?s help, and without our help even a government bailout can?t save the industry or economy.
c. Hotels and resorts need your business.
