1.1 Introduction
Gauteng is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. It was formed from part of the old Transvaal Province after South Africa’s first all-race elections on 27 April 1994. It was initially named Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging (PWV) and was renamed “Gauteng” in December 1994. It is situated in the Highveld. The aim of my report is to convince the committee to award Gauteng the bid to host the conference in 2015. Gauteng can offer local offering which is a short walk away from the SWF is Soweto Outdoor Adventures, which offers bungi-jumping, quad-biking, paint-ball games and other exciting activities. Soweto Outdoor Adventures is part of a broader collective called SoWeToo, an exciting collective of small tourism businesses within the township.
SoWeToo has developed “the Red Taxi” which links up with the Red Bus, otherwise known as the Hop On-Hop-Off Bus. This new addition to the Jo’burg cityscape is a unique and original day tour which links points of interest in the city, including Gautrain Park Station (where the route starts), Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City, where adventurous people can hop off and hop into the red taxi bound for Soweto. There are over 9 000 kilometres of road in Johannesburg, of which all but 940 kilometres are tarred. The Ben Schoeman – or M1- highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, the country’s administrative capital, is the busiest in the southern hemisphere, and is used by some 300 000 commuters each weekday. The airport, which has just undergone a major R850-million facelift, was voted the best airport in Africa in 2004 for the second consecutive year. The gautrain is a cost-effective, convenient and environmentally friends new way of travelling. It will help to create job opportunities and enhance economic growth in Gauteng. Tourists visiting Gauteng will be able to enjoy a safe and convenient transport system. The gautrain is classified as a high-speed train system and can reach a maximum speed during operations of 160 Km/h. The gautrain takes 15 minutes to travel between O.R Tambo International Airport and Sandton, and 34 minutes between Sandton and Hatfield in Pretoria. Before travelling on the gautrain, you need to buy a Gold Card that costs R12.besides entry to the train, the card also gives you access to the parking stations and buses .you can buy a Gold Card (which looks like a normal bank card)at gautrain station or at supermarkets specified on the gaitrain’s official website. You only need to purchase the Gold Card once, and use it every time you want to travel on the gautrain.You can load “journey trips” onto your Gold Card at a ticketing machine at any of the gautrain stations. To use the ticketing machine, you insert your Gold Card, select your destination, and pay by cash, credit or debit card. Your Gold Card will then contain your ticket. The peak frequency of the gautrain is 12 minutes and the off-peak frequency is 20 minutes. The gautrain starts operating from 5:09 am to 21:30 am.
