Trace Juliets development during the course of the play while comparing her with Romeo where possible.
In the play “Romeo and Juliet” we see Juliet maturing rapidly into a young inexperienced woman into a mature woman.
We first hear of Juliet when her mother is talking to the nurse about her age. We hear “she is not fourteen” this gives the audience an idea that Juliet will be young and immature.
We see Juliet when her mother,Lady Capulet asks her “how stands your disposition to be married”. Juliet replies ” it is an honor that i dream not of” this tells us that she has never really thought about marriage before now, reinforcing the audiences views about her being young and childish. Lady Capulet says “like of Paris’s love” Juliet replies “I’ll look to like if looking liking move” this tells us that Juliet would never think of disobeying her mother. She is very obedient and will always rely on her mothers consent to do things.
From the first scenes we can see and image of Juliet being portrayed, she is obedient and young and has never really thought about getting married before.
At the Capulets party, Romeo first sets eyes on Juliet. He compares her to a “holy shrine” then she replies with more religious imagery. This shows she is young and inexperienced but is still clever and can flirt. This is the first bit in the play that shows Juliet’s growing maturity and cleverness.

We then get further evidence of her cleverness when she is asking the nurse about the guests at the party showing no real interest in Romeo As to not give her liking for him away.
In the balcony scene we see Juliet being the sensible one and Romeo wanting sex. This takes over his world and he becomes childish and immature. Juliet is sensible. “Whats Montague” meaning she doesnt care about the name she just wants love. She is being smart about it though. She will not risk getting caught with a Montague. In the second part of the balcony scene we get evidence of Romeo wanting marriage. Juliet is realising that it is moving to fast. Romeo is only interested n sex.
When Juliet is waiting for the nurse to return with news from Romeo, we see that she is desperatly in love and cannot wait for the nurse to return with news. When the nurse returns she see shes how impatient Juliet is being and decided to tease her. ” do you not see that i am out of breathe” Juliet replies “how is thou out of breath if thou has breath to tell me that art out of breath”. The nurse is playing a game because she knows howe desperate she is. Lter in the scene the nurse has still delayed in telling her. She is moments away from telling her and then stops and says “wheres your mother” she deliberatly changes the subject. Juliets reaction is impatient and immature. It shows the audience that she is still young but gives you contrast of what she used to be so that it is easily recognised that she has matured. You can see that the nurse is obsessed with sex ” there stays a husband to make you a wife” meaning Romeo wants to have sex with her. She finally gets the news she has been waiting on.
Later on Romeo has still not turned up and juliet is showing her dersperate side. She wants the night to come as the night will bring Romeo “the sobre suited matron all dressed in black, learn me how to win a losong match”. She is talking about losing her virginity with Romeo and making their marriage official. “so tedious is this day” The younger more impatient side of Juliet is showing through.
Shakespeare uses dramatic irony when Tibalt dies. The nurse comes in a gives Juliet the news. Juliet thinks that she is talking about Romeo. She is really talking about Tibalt. The audience knows who is really dead. Juliet is the only one who doesnt. If Romeo is dead then Juliet wants to die to. Her first thoughts that Romeo has killed himself. “hat Romeo slaine himself”. “Romeo slaughtered and Tibalt dead” she thinks that they are both dead.
The Essay on Romeo Juliet Nurse Friar Death
There have been many arguments during the past on whose fault it really was that caused the tragic death of the two young lovers Romeo and Juliet, in the William Shakespeare play. There have been many suspected people in this tragic story of Romeo and Juliet on who caused these two young lovers death or was it just their destiny. Had it not been for the compliance of both the nurse and the Friar, ...
When the nurse tells her that Tibalt is dead but Romeo is still living she is yet to know that it was Romeo who killed Tibalt. “Romeo has killed him Romeo is banished”. Juliets first reaction is that she hates romeo. Shakespeare uses oxymorons to show how she is seeing Romeo at this point “did ever a dragon keep so fair a cave” saying that he has masked his evil well.
Soon these oxymorons start to show her feelings. They show her confusion and how she hates him but loves him at the same time.
“shame come to Romeo” the nurse insults Romeo infront of Juliet and she doesnt like it. She starts to stand up for him even after finding out that he killed Tibalt “shall i speak ill of him that is my husband”. This is an action of a mature person.
When Romeo Arrives Juliet is relieved but when it is time for him to leave again we see her turn into a desperate child again “wilt thou be gone? it is not yet near day”. The nurse comes in and tells them that someone is coming and that he must leave quickly. “the window let day in , and life out” meaning that romeo must leave when the day comes so he can leave undetected. This shows taht Juliet is sad when he leaves and that she is desperatly in love. before he leaves Juliet has a vision it is a vision of romeo dead in a tomb which is what happens at the ending.
In the next part there is alot of mis-understanding. Juliet must b smart and mis-lead her mother into thinking that she is talking about and feeling for Tibalts death. After this conversation she is told by her mother that she has got to get married on Thursday morning to Paris. It is against the religion to get married twice. Juliet is still young so is scared about the concept of hell. “he shall not make me a joyful bride” now she is being disobidient whereas at the start of the play she was not. She always did what her mother told her to. Now this change in personality is obvious as we can see how she used to be and how she is now. Lady Cpaulet tells Juliet to take it up with her father, Capulet. “let thee to church on thursday or never look me in the face” If she doesnt get married her father will kick her out. If he were to kick her out it would be as bad as death for a gilr as young as Juliet to be on the street. Juliet has been rejected by her mother and know her father. she doesnt know who to turn to know. She finally turns to the nurse who is more than a nurse to Juliet, she is a close friend and has been like a mother to her from a young age. Whent he nurse starts to agree with Capulet and Lady Capulet Juliet has no one else to turn to. ” marry i will, and this is wisely done” the nurse is agreeing with her parents. “ancient damnation, ‘o’ wicked fiend” Juliet means how can we ever be close again. Her last option is to turn to Friar Lawrence.

We see that juliet has changed alot from the start of the play. We see her father asking her where have you been. She replies ” where i have learned to repent the sin of disobidient composition” this is a lie. At the styart of the play she would never have thought of lying to her parents.
