In most large cities, the traffic congestion has arisen as a major concern for the individual and public. In this essay, I will analyze the underlying reasons for the issue and put forward suggestions on how to tackle it. The overload of traffic volume on the road is mainly triggered by a number of reasons. First and foremost, in some highly developed cities, the number of car owners has surged over the past few years because of the promotion in people’s life standards. However, the construction of roads and highways has lagged far behind the booming in car industries so increasing numbers of vehicles bring roads a heavy burden. Secondly, the unreasonable city layout is also usually blamed on the heavy traffic. In large cities of China, such as Shanghai and Beijing particularly, the business area is mainly concentrated on the city center whereas the households are dispersed around the outskirt. When it comes to peak hours, drivers are forced to spend a bulk of time in waiting on the road because of the heavy traffic. Thirdly, the individual’s choice or preference is another catalyst. It has been widely accepted that driving vehicles could make people reach almost everywhere within the city at will. Unlike traveling by public transportation, people have to be constrained by its timetable.
In order to alleviate the traffic congestion in cities, measures could be taken in two aspects. At first, a long-term solution is that satellite cities could be established and developed in the suburb of cities and thus, people could no longer drive a car to commute between their home and workplace. Rather, all essential services could be located within walking distance or easily accessible by public transport. Additionally, public transportation, including bus, subway or taxi should be supported and developed further by the government. If people are accustomed to using public transportation for their first choice when going out, the number of private cars on the road will shrink evidently. In summary, I believe some factors, as argued above, should be attributed to the traffic congestion in cities or towns. If we seriously take the issue into consideration and adopt proper actions, it is very likely to be solved in the foreseeable future.
