Truth is Stranger than Fiction (1) In this paper, we will discuss the economic miracle, which took place in Germany, after Nazi party came to power, because there are valid reasons for us to believe that the economic rebirth of Germany, associated with Hitlers rule, can be referred to as truth that is stranger than fiction. Todays Medias portray Weimar republic as democratic and even progressive country. The truth is slightly different. The annual inflation ratio in Germany, between 1920 and 1930, was often reaching 300%. Sixty percent of Germanys workforce was unemployed. Germany had to pay enormous reparations. German cities were filled with homeless people and many political observers used to suggest that it was only the matter of very short time, before Germany would cease to exist as sovereign nation.
Hitlers promises to install law and order and to revive Germany sounded like a bad joke, at the time, and very few people considered him seriously. Nevertheless, by 1936, the unemployment in Germany was completely liquidated. Workers began to enjoy unprecedented social benefits, such as paid vacations abroad and free housing. With beginning of Volkswagen Beetle production, cars ceased to be the luxury items in Germany, even before it happened in America. The workers living standards in Germany became highest in the whole world. All this was being accomplished within a matter of few years, which is nothing short of a miracle. This appears as being especially strange, given the fact that Hitler did not know anything about economics.

In fact, he used to take pride in his lack of education, while suggesting that only people who are completely unaware of how economics work, should be put in charge of every nations economic development. Hitlers professional incompetence did not prevent him from achieving economical successes, one after another, on continuous basis, which was the reason that his popularity among Germans kept on growing, even during the time of war. In his article How Hitler Consolidated Power in Germany and Launched a Social Revolution, Leon Degrelle provides us the insight on the essence of economical miracle, which was made possible under Hitlers rule: In the eyes of the capitalists, money was the sole active element in the flourishing of a country’s economy. To Hitler’s way of thinking, that conception was radically wrong: capital, on the contrary, was only an instrument. Work was the essential element: man’s endeavor, mans honor, blood, muscles and soul (Degrelle).
Hitler was able to prove that individuals willingness to achieve concrete results stands above professionalism.
Countless experts who were predicting that Nazi party was going to destroy German economy, were being publicly humiliated. (2) It is almost impossible for us to comprehend the scope of German economical revival, before outbreak of WW2. What does not seem to make any sense is that the process of Germanys transformation into the happiest country in the world, did not rely on financial investments from abroad. This contradicts the most fundamental principle of modern economics. We are all aware that the policy of self-reliance is associated with people eating grass, while being forced to work for twelve hours a day, seven days a week as it is the case in Communist North Korea. However, in Germany, before the war, the application of this policy had a totally opposite effect.
Hitler was able to rid German economy of speculative capital, which used to undermine the integrity of the nation, before he was being elected as Chancellor. By doing it, be benefited ordinary citizens, in very practical sense of this word. What does not make much of the sense is the fact that the mechanics of Hitlers economic reforms are very simple, but it did not prevent these reforms from being associated with such an enormous positive effects. Todays economists have a hard time, while trying to define what allowed Hitler to accomplish so much, within such a short period of time, without having to resort to the help of professionals. This is the reason why we can discuss twelve years of Nazi rule in Germany within a context of truth being stranger than miracle. Despite the fact that our attitude towards Hitler is strongly negative, it might very well be the case that studying his economic legacy might provide us with the key to solving many global issues, such as combating worlds hunger or reducing the rate of unemployment world-wide.
