The Truth of the Mining Toxins In this novel Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver is based on two sisters figuring out where they belong in life. They grow up in a small Native Latino American city named Grace, Arizona. In this small town there is a river that runs through the town. Codi, the older sister, is a teacher at the local school. She decided to take her students to the river to look at the water under a microscope and discovered that the water is contaminated. She ended up discussing this problem with a small group called the Stich Bitch Club.
This group is only women and they discuss things about the town and many problems that occur in their everyday life. While the men of the town couldn’t get involved, the women solved things from the environment to help the town by being powerful feminists. After Cody was brought into the group she known she would have to tell this information to the woman about the Black Mountain mining. The mining has been running sulfuric acid in the water through the town of Grace that is causing trees to die, including microscopic animals in the river. This sulfuric acid can also be used to kill rats and pond algae and many other small things in the river, but not the fish.
Mining toxins are something that is released into the environment by the businesses throughout the United States. In my research I discovered that the mining industry toxins that were most released was in the year 1998. Some things were, “metal mining: 3. 5 billion pounds, Gold mining: 1. 23 billion pounds, Air: 2 million pounds, coal mining: 13. 3 million pounds.” (Drillbits, 1) For example, “Toxin gas released from a Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal that killed 2, 500 people in India, in 1984.” (Drillbits, 1) All these different toxins are causing damage in the water, but most of all it is killing innocent people.
The Essay on In Your Opinion Are Water Resources Over Or Undervalued In The United States
In your opinion are water resources over or undervalued in the United States? Water is the most important life element to humans after oxygen. Without water human can live only up to 3 days after which they would die. Today water represents a great and profitable industry for the fact that the producers of the main US soft drinks need water, as well as the ordinary citizen who use water for their ...
In the book it shows that Codi did discuss this problem with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and they also discovered the sulfuric acid in the river. According to the Stich and Bitch Club they know they had to stop the company from building a dam and polluting the river. A certain woman from the Stich and Bitch Club suggested that, “My husband used to be a crane operator when the mine was running; he would know how to fix up the bulldozers from hell to breakfast.” (Kingsolver, 178) Obviously the woman thought that they could run over the men involved in the company. For instance a woman mentioned, “But your husband won’t put Chinese arithmetic past no bulldozers.” (Kingsolver, 178) The Club then moved on to something realist to put the company out of business. They all came up with a great idea to pluck peacock feathers and make pi~nat as out.
They know that there town would not want to buy them, so they decided to sell them in Tucson, Arizona as folk art. Soon after selling many pi~nat as the media got a hold of this great idea by these women, and were interested in their story of their town problem. Not too much longer the women know that with this publicity that there town was going to start to change. In mining companies there is also a good side to them. There are many jobs for all the men that need some sort of job.
It then allows shelter for many families and the population becomes greater. Transportation is also something that the mines have gained. In the town of Grace there also is Black Mountain mining, railroads, and many orchards. These things are beneficial for all the people in the town, but if it is causing things to die from this sort of acid then they definitely need someone to take over and help the environment become strong again, so if it wasn’t’ for Codi, becoming strong and caring enough about her town then only time could tell what was going to happen next. As for the two writers in the book, World of Ides, they both have two very different beliefs, but they both have a good reason to disagree on the topics between capitalism and proletariat. Adam Smith is considered to be a proletariat and talks a lot about the free trade between rural and urban.
The Essay on Women in Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart”
Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart was published in 1958 and is the seminal African novel in English. Although there are others, none are as influential, not only in African literature, but in literature around the world. It's most amazing feature is that it portrays Africa, but mostly the Ibo society, before white men arrived. Achebe is trying not only to tell the outside world about Ibo cultural ...
On the other hand, Karl Marx the communist, which is completely different, believes more about class war between rich and poor. After reading what they authors discussed I agree with Marx beliefs with the difference between the two important things in life that happen with many people and their families. In Marx reading he discussed that, ” They direct their attacks not against the bourgeois conditions of production, but against the instrument of production themselves; they destroy imported wares that compete with their labor, they smash to pieces machinery, they set factories ablaze, they seek to restore by force the vanished status of the workman of the Middle Ages.” (Marx pg. 229) The whole reason mines are so hazardous is because of the sulfuric acid this is a mixture of, “H 2 S 04, Corrosive, oily, colorless liquid, with a specific gravity of 1.
85. When it is mixed with water considerable heat is released.” (On-line Sulfuric acid) This acid is the cause of all little things to die in the water, including acid -rain that causes many of the trees to also die. As the acid found in the native town it has caused them to become closer as friends and also as powerful women in the small town of Grace. In conclusion, there are many different mines in the United States. As you can see from the book Animal Dreams women have the same opportunity to make something change, but they only had to believe in themselves to cause the problem in their river to disappear. If it wasn’t for The Stitch and Bitch Club in Grace, Arizona the town would still be poisoned by the sulfuric acid in the rivers water.
As you can see, women have many opportunities in the 2000’s that they didn’t have before. All the different things in the world have complete changed for the better, and it allows women to do things that they only dream and today they can come true.
The Essay on The Role Of Women In Things Fall Apart
The Role of Women in Things Fall Apart In society, both males and females take distinct roles. It is those roles that keep “life” functioning; but which role is more important? Often times, women are degraded and forced into the roles viewed “unnecessary”. This is what happened in the Ibo society during Chinua Achebe’s book, Things Fall Apart. The presence of women ...
