There are many weaknesses of the medical model. One of the weaknesses that I am going to talk about is that in some cases people see the medical model as an insult due to the fact that the model tries to ‘fix’ people with a disability instead of making adjustments and adaptions to environments, activities etc… for them. Due to the fact that the medical model is trying to ‘fix’ tem, may seem to people that the ones with the disability cannot have a normal, healthy life like other people do who do not suffer with a disability. People may also feel like the medical model is saying that is the individual’s fault that they have a disability and due to this they are not willing to help the best that they could. This links to the fact that overall, the medical model thinks that it is the persons fault with the disability and that it is their fault that the environment /society disempowers them from taking part in day to day activities. This fits in with the fact that the model will not peruse in making many changes to anything to help the person with the disability, that its them that should adapt, not the environment. Another weakness of the medical model is that it can stop individuals with a disability from working due to the fact that the working environment will not adapt their buildings in order for others with difficulties to access fully in order to work.
This weakness to the model can cause people with a disability /difficulty doing certain things, to be upset – causing stress on their family, especially if they want their child to have a life as normal as and other child. Another point is that the medical model makes a lot of people feel that they are only good enough for people to use them in order to find a cure for something. This is another factor which could cause stress upon the families and also different problems as parents or carers will want the very best for their child and be upset /feel stressed that they’re being treated so unfairly.

Linking to this is the fact that the medical model does not offer support or advice to families who do have a child with a disability. So, if for example, families are becoming stressed and depressed due to the fact that they can see their child has difficulties and that they cannot give them what they wanted to give them, it will cause a negative atmosphere and even more problems overall – as this stress may build up so much the parents begin to act like they wouldn’t normally act instead of supporting each other and their child the best that they can. As families are not getting any positive help /support, it could lead to further problems which may be picked up on by the child – which could possibly affect their feelings and learning and problems later on in life. One strength of the medical model is that people who are suspected to have a disability, should be diagnosed, it ensure that the working environment /learning environment know what the children need support with, where they may struggle or excel so that it ensure that they can provide the extra support, due to health and safety reasons. Linking to this is the fact that with medical diagnosis, a child can receive a statement which will get them extra support in education; by extra support being given by staff to a child/person with a disability, means that it will help them overall and could also in many cases, make them feel more comfortable and happy knowing that they do have some support and advice when needed. Also, as they are getting support it could possible help them with their stress – which may not occur so much in the family or with the child/adult with the disability. The second strength of this model is that scientists are trying to find a cure which can be used on people in order to prevent disabilities occurring.

Due to the fact that scientists are trying to do this, means that in the future they may be able to find a cure to help with people who are believed to have a disability or those who could end up with a disability when born or as they develop. This could help many people in a variety of different ways such as getting an education, getting a job, socialising /making friends and many more points which their disability may affect. Scientists may develop a medicine or cure which could change some people’s lives who suffer with a disability; which could make them feel fantastic overall, more confident in themselves and raise their self-esteem. The third strength of the medical model is that it can help to raise money for charities. By money being raised for charities it means that children may also be helped alongside, as the charities may help by buying resources for disabled children within different environments to help them learn, or by donating money to environments in order for them to get it adapted to suit many children with difficulties /disabilities.

One of the weaknesses of the social model is that it believes that environments should be adapted around the child; which means that if there are extra areas where the child may need extra support in, for example; having a councillor… they will need to receive this extra support they need. These changes may not be able to take place due to cost; which the school may not have the findings for. If the school /environments do not have the money it means that some children may not be able to have a place within the school. This could happen if there aren’t certain adaptions made such as; having a lift put in place, if they are a wheelchair user, and having bars on toilet doors and at the side of the toilet, also around the building for them to hold onto to ensure that accidents don’t occur. Another weakness to this model is that in some cases, it may seem like the model excludes some people who have got a disability, or the model may make them feel different – this could be due to the fact that they may be in a special needs school or designated school. If children are treated or made to feel different or are made to feel excluded, it will affect their overall learning and development and also how confident they feel in themselves as well as their own feelings overall. By making adaptations to the buildings occurring, it means that the child will feel more included within society and feel like part of the group and may also feel that they are able to complete tasks that other children can take part in. This could lead to the child feeling happy and in some cases more confident in themselves as they begin to learn and achieve more. Another strength of this model is that it looks at people with disabilities more positively than the medical model. This is important due to the fact it means that children will be given the support that is needed in order for them to learn and achieve as much as they can.
This helps in different situations such as trips and role plays. A child who is in a wheelchair may be unable to go on a trip due to the medical model, however the social model enables and makes adaptations to suit the child /adult with disability and as this model has a more positive outlook it means that the children’s needs are conquered. Also, it means children who are in education receive resources and one to one support to help develop. Children will be able to enjoy different activities which are planned & put into action for them. Another strength of this model is that it empowers disabled people due to the fact that they are able to complete tasks for themselves; be more independent instead of relying on other people. The model gives people the confidence to do their best at whatever they try as there will be help along the way if and when needed. This shows how overall there are both strengths and weaknesses to both models which can make children and their families have different feelings and also have a different impact upon their children’s learning and development.
