In this task I am going to describe Jean Piaget’s and Tina Bruce’s theories about how children’s understandings of mathematical develop.
Piaget
Jean Piaget’s research led him to believe that we develop by taking in information, which is then processed by the brain and as a result of this our behaviour changes. He started that there are staged of development that children move through. The ages are approximate but the sequence is the same for everyone. •Sensori-motor (0-2) – using senses and reflexes
•Pre – operational (2-7)- using symbols and language
•Concrete operational (7-12)- developing more logical thought •Formal operational (12+)- capable of abstract thought
He also developed the idea of schemas as ideas or concepts that children need to master in order to learn about relationships.
Bruce
Tina Bruce suggested that as children play they strengthen and manage learning strategies and in this way they will develop concepts and ideas. She stated that children need to learn by direct experiences and that learning by observing others, either in reality or though television/DVDs, they will not achieve the higher quality processes that will enable them to learn more efficiently. Taking part enables children to socialise with others and they will gradually be involved in games with rules of varying degrees and they will also use language and activities such as drama, creative and music as tools to represent the thought processes.
