Unit 8: Caring for children.
Task 1: Write a reflective account of how the practitioner should respond to parents.
P8.1- It is important that when parents come to you with any enquiries you must ensure to give the parents eye contact and listen to what the enquiry is, it is important that you advice the parents on what to do or being a practitioner if you don’t have the knowledge needed to deal with the enquiry you politely explain to the parents and then advise them on who is more suitable to be able to help more and share more knowledge on the enquiry. It is also important that you ask the parent if they need to be taken to the staff member who is more suitable for them and if they do wish to you either direct them to where the staff member is based or if the staff member is in a complicated base then you take the parent to them, however if you can’t leave the room you are working in for example if there isn’t enough supervision in the area you’re working in then it is important that you check if any other staff are available to take the parent to the specific staff member and politely ask them to direct them there however if there are no free staff available it is important you explain to the parent that it would be best to either ring up the nursery or wait until one of the staff members are free to be able to take them.

It is important that you take the parent seriously when the parent is explaining the enquiry to you and it is important that you respect the parents by not repeating any of what the parent has asked you or gossip about what the parent has just enquired about. However if you are able to answer the enquiry it is important that you don’t pass any judgement on the parent and you answer the enquiry truthfully for example if the parent asks you what the child has been doing in the setting today or how has the child behaved it is important that you answer them truthfully and confident and not like you don’t want to tell the parent, for example if the child has been hitting another child or has refused to do something or spoken to a member of staff or yourself in an inappropriate way it is important that your show your confident about telling the parent so the parent knows your being 100% truthful, if you start stuttering and seem like you don’t really want to tell them the truth then the parent may think your trying to patronise them. It is important that your 100% honest as this could be some vital information the parent needs to know. If the parent has enquired about what the child has done in the setting and you have any evidence to back up what you’re saying for example if the child has produced some good numeracy skills on a piece of paper then it is important that you show this to the parent. It is important that when speaking to any parent or responding to any enquiries you receive from the parents you ensure that you have a cheery, helpful voice while speaking to them as this will give of a good impression and will make the parents know you’re willing to help and listen to them. It is important that you are polite and respectful and give eye contact to the parent, and give the parent enough information you can when dealing with any enquires from them.
P8.2- There are many ways of maintaining confidentiality.
It is important that whatever has happened in the setting no information is shared outside the setting to anyone it doesn’t concern for example not repeating any of what has happened to your friends or on Facebook, or make the issue gossip able it is important that nothing about what has happened in the setting goes out of the setting’s doors. It is important that if any observations have taken place and is leaving the setting’s premises then the child’s identity is hidden for example naming a child “child A” however if the observation is staying in the setting you are able to state the child’s name in some cases. Another way to maintain confidentiality is by having all of the children’s records locked away in either a locked cupboard or pass worded computer in which only the people it concerns having access to the records. It is important that before anyone other than the nursery manager or the deputy (only is the manager is absent) has written permission from the family before having access to any of the children’s records. Another way to maintain confidentiality is by keeping any written reports which state children’s names in a secure place, another way to maintain confidentiality is by ensuring all staff is aware of the confidentiality police. Another way of maintaining confidentiality is by complying with all requirements of the Data Protection Act. Another way of maintaining confidentiality is if any personal issues are going on with the child are kept between the people it concerns and no one else. By maintaining confidentiality ensures that the children are not put at any danger and are being kept safe. If any of the confidentiality policy is breached then this would be breaching the Data Protection Act 1998 which is against the law and could result in further damage to yourself for example being sacked.
The Essay on Parents in child’s life
Parents are an integral part of any child’s life. They are his safe haven, his stepping stones and his personal cheerleaders.
