University life as I have experienced brought about a shift or a change in my life. I had previously thought a lot about how it was going to be, and whether I was ready to take on a more mature role, even as a student, as it turns out today, the journey was fun. In my case, university helped open up my eyes and look at things differently.
I was a student pursuing a business management program, and I had not previously taken a lot of business courses, so now I started to look at things happening in life from a more business point of view. Even when faced with making the simplest of decisions I would try and assess the risk and the returns or the benefit.
However, as some of my teachers pointed out during their classes, it is impossible for anyone to learn everything in a classroom, which meant that in order to have a complete grasp over a subject or a topic I had to try and find other methods of learning and not always expect the Professor to help me with it, which made me realize that this is how the corporate environment is like, there wont always be people around to help me figure out solutions and sometimes I might need to figure out solutions and take certain measures in order to do so, all on my own, and this was critical.
I still believe that a good businessman or woman is one who is able to make accurate decisions in the least amount of time available, and this is what was always on my mind during the later half of my time at the university. I also developed a habit of reading the newspaper on a daily basis, and then have a healthy discussion with my friends about the various socio-economic and political issues evolving in recent time. It all benefitted me a lot. I developed a new perspective towards things.

I got to learn from experiences with my class mates, and I soon realized how important it is in business to manage networks and build good personal relations with people. One of the most important variables I came across while at college, and which I thought holds the key to success, was emotional intelligence. I can definitely see it now, and I was lucky enough to have figured it out early in my college days that a successful manager or leader, no matter what type of business he is leading or managing, has a higher degree of emotional intelligence.
I always used to apply this concept when faced with a situation where I had to make a choice or let’s say a decision. Most of these inspirations came from already successful business people about whom I would read in the newspaper and business magazines, and I would try to emulate these concepts in real life hoping I could be a little better with my work. I must say I have learnt a lot from the experiences that I had at the college with social groups that we had in college, i. e. eing the member of the student body at the college, I had the opportunity to work with other students, and cope with some of the difficulties that most teams and groups face and then try to overcome these situations. I knew my quantitative skills were good, so I always wanted to pursue a career in finance. My university was definitely the primary source of improvement in my communication skills, especially Oral communication, as I had to give presentations on a regular basis for almost every course that I took, some times an individual one and sometimes we used to have group presentations.
Initially I found myself a little nervous at it but then I got used to it and now I feel that I have improved immensely and grown in confidence as a speaker and a presenter. Also during my years at the university I had to do a lot of group work, which included group assignments, conducting research, preparing reports and giving presentations, this helped me immensely when I entered the corporate environment, as I had to perform different tasks with different groups of individuals, and I had already been through it many a times, so it took me little time to adapt and collaborate with others.

There were quite a few courses that have helped me a lot, and still do. Although ‘International relations’ was one of my general courses, I thought I had a wonderful time taking the course. I initially didn’t know what to expect out of it. To be honest I selected it out of peer pressure but soon I began to realize how important it was for a business manager to know about the various conflicts the world had seen and what had led to their evolution over time. It was a mix of historical events and current affairs between various states.
And since, businesses have gone global now, it is important that we have an insight on the political relations and history that prevails between various states. Oral and speech communication was another general course that helped me groom my personality in a very profound manner. I selected it as a challenge, because I wanted to desperately improve upon my communication skills. Previously I thought that it was all in-born, and that there were individuals who were good communicators by birth, and on the other hand some weren’t that good at it.
I obviously thought myself to be part of the latter category. But after taking this course I realized that there is a method to everything, and ‘practice makes a man perfect’, and four months later I could feel a definite improvement in my communication skills, both oral and written. And this as I have come to realize is very important during job interviews and job selection, as these days personality and communication skills are given preference over GPAs.
Principles of Macroeconomics was one of my core courses, which I selected primarily because I wanted myself to know atleast the basics of economics as I hadn’t taken any course in economics before that. With this course I learnt about how states and their economies function and how states figure out whether to implement a contractionary or expansionary fiscal policy, the GDP and its determinants, money exchanges, etc, all of which are very important especially for a bank manager in order to forecast the banks strategy in accordance to that of the state and the Federal reserve system.

Business Finance was another very important core course that I took. I knew I wanted a career in finance so this one had to be important. Since, I was good with mathematics, I soon developed a strong attachment with this subject. I enjoyed analyzing company’s financial statements and using various tools and models in order to assess and identify risks. Although this course was a basic finance course and later during the same program I took advanced courses in finance, I thought I learnt the most from this one as it laid down the basis for a career that I now see myself excelling at.
I like most others believe that learning is a life long process, and for me this process still continues. Almost everyday at work I learn a few new things, some that directly relate to my work and some that do not, but I feel, that the days I spent at the university and the money I spent there were all worth the time and effort. Today I can definitely attribute so much of what I have achieved in life to my university. It has definitely proven to be a means to an end in my case.
