US Constitution and Paradox of Democracy It is a matter of fact that the federal government of the United States of American was created by the Constitution of 1789. The federal government is called so because it was formed by the constitution among thirteen states. It is known that the states agreed to form central authority and submit themselves to it. It means that thirteen separate states formed one nation with the only one Constitution. It is a common knowledge that the Preamble to constitution mentions six main purposes for which the new government of the United States of America was established. (Kehen 1996)These purposes forms have to form perfect union, to provide domestic tranquility and justice, to provide nation with necessary defense.
Their tasks involve also promoting and assisting national welfare and liberties of people. All the purposes are of great importance. The composers of the Constitution were making in such a way extraordinary statement in the history of governments. The Preamble emphasizes that it is people who created government and granted it powers for necessary objectives. (Dye 2004) Two purposes are similar among all governments. They are police power or domestic tranquility and constant defense from foreign enemies.
it is noted that the other purposes arose from the political thought of the Enlightenment and from the experience of the United States in its relations with Britain. (Kehen 1996) It is necessary to admit that the idea of union replaced the failure of Confederation. Till American Revolution injustice was common in Parliament. The new purpose is general welfare and it raises controversy. This purpose involves serving to common good. But many political critics disputed the context of the purpose. For example, for Jefferson this term was rather empty and nonsense.
The Term Paper on Compare Purpose of a State
Introduction What is a state? In different times in different places different people understood the meaning of this word in a different way. Definition for this term was being gathered for ages modifying and evaluating as the times went by (already since the times of Ancient Greece (beginning ~1000 BC)). It can be explained by differences in level of knowledge people had, political situation, and ...
For Hamilton the idea of general welfare is the way to gain unlimited authority of the government, because all actions taken can be termed as for the national welfare. (Dye 2004) Abraham Lincoln stated the real objective of the government was to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do for themselves in their separate capacities. (Kehen 1996) There are additional things which can be performed by the government. They are building of roads, airports, highways, etc. the government has to support public schools. The next moment to admit is the paradox of democracy in the modern world. The best system of government is well-formulated democracy, because it provides stability in the country during long period of time. The period of time is longer than life span of single ruler.
Limited monarchy is one more close system, but it is not democratic anyway. It is apparent that democracy can be proclaimed until there is no civil stability. It means that if citizens of the country dont feel safe and defended when they take part in government, speaking out, voting, then it is impossible to establish proper democratic institutions. (Judis 2001) The paradox is that democracy brings stability, but people need stability and only then democracy. The paradox of democracy is also the fact that the greatest moral value is its principled elevation of the individual can be its worst practical weakness. It is necessary to mention terrorist act in US in 2001.
For example, democracy provides common defense for all nation and individuals in particular. Democracy proclaims the idea of peace. And the paradox is how to act in such situation when it is impossible to stay away? (Judis 2001) In conclusion it is necessary to notice that Founding Fathers tried to guarantee people democracy by implementing and composing of the constitution which is told to be the grant of democracy. The Constitution is created for moral and religious people, who believe in victory of democracy in the world. The role of Founding Father is great, because they fashioned a country whose principles are based only on democratic visions. Founding Fathers remodeled and intensified the role of the presidency and nation. They brought liberty and democracy into the country.
