As many as 80% of the world’s population are said to be iron deficient, while 30% have overt iron deficiency anemia, which is persistently affecting all populations irrespective of race, culture or ethnic background (Denic & Agarwal, 2007), In Sudan, no accurate statistical data are available, iron deficiency anemia is considered by Hamad, (2007) in a 4.4 % rate to be the forth leading cause of death after malaria, viral pneumonia & malignant neoplasms. Iron bioavailability and adverse effects of commercially available iron salts have always been a concern to both patients and treating doctors and may affect patients’ compliance. It seems logical and acceptable to respond to the urgent call for novel approaches that need to be explored to improve iron bioavailability from complementary food according to Davidsson (2003).
The fruit of locally known Goddaim (Grewia tenax) is currently one of the most commonly used plants for iron deficiency anemia in Sudan.
Methods & Materials
This experiment had been carried as an attempt to validate the traditional use of Grewia tenax by quantifying the amount of iron transferred across the mucosal membrane , using the everted rat gut sac In Vitro model. Whole water extract, dichloromethane fraction of water extract and the alcoholic extract at 10 mg/ ml concentrations were used. Everted rats’ duodena had been prepared, incubated in oxygenated media of ringer lactate containing 200 uM/l Ferrous sulphate solution, for 15 minutes at 37 degrees centigrade in an oscillating water bath at 60 cycles per minute. Recovered iron was measured both in the serosal and mucosal sides of the duodenal sacs by a spectrophotometer.
The Essay on Iron Deficiency Anemia Diet Disease Absorption
Disease Related to Nutrition Paper The purpose of this paper is to define the disease called Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA). In this paper I will discuss the disease effect and their actions. The casual factors, the populations are susceptible to this disease. The role of diet used in the prevention, the diet used in the management of the disease, and if there is a cure for this disease will diet be ...
Results The highest iron concentration was reported at the serosal side of the duodenal sac with the whole water extract, followed by the alcoholic extract, while that of the dichloromethane fraction was very similar to the control.
Conclusion: It was concluded that Grewia tenax fruits aqueous extract significantly accelerated the transfer of iron across the mucosa through a mechanism which needs to be elucidated by further studies.
