In 1468 a great man was born. A man who would later change the world of trade. This man was Vasco da Gama. Vasco da gama was born in a seafaring town named Sines in 1468. Vasco always enjoyed the sea.
Even as a young lad the sea had a major role in his life. The ocean had s large influence on him and his future. As a boy he regularly participated in such recreational activities as fishing, boating, swimming, and sailing. Very little was known about Vasco da Gama’s life before he was appointed as the captain of the fleet sent to find a sea route to India. Vasco da Gama son of Est^ev~ao da Gama, a knight commander of Cereal of the Order of St. James of the Sword.
He was a great man as a leader and an explorer. Vasco was strongly influenced by his father who was a member of the Household of prince Dom Fernando. Master of the Order of St. James and later on, to that of the prince’s son, Dom Diego, duke of Vise u, having also fought in Castille and in the North Africa’s military campaigns.
Vasco’s father’s side of the family was from the southern province of Alentejo, and it had close links with the military Order of Avis and later on with the Order of St. James. In 1497 on July 8 th Vasco da Gama set sail from Libs on on what would be the first of three voyages he would experience in his life. This first voyage would receive the most fame and publicity for its great achievement. The purpose of Vasco’s first voyage was to find a sea route to India. He succeeded where Columbus had failed.
