Vector organisms are parasites that transmit various diseases. Two vector organisms are ticks and mosquitoes. These two vector organisms transmit many well-known diseases. Through most of this essay, I will be explaining these two different organisms and the diseases that they carry.
First, I will be explaining deer ticks. Ticks are small spider-like organisms that attach themselves to a donor body. Male ticks are black. Females have a red abdomen and some black near the head. Adult ticks usually feed on deer but some times feed on humans accidentally. Deer ticks go through three life stages. The first stage is the larva. The larvae are small and tan colored. They usually feed on things like chipmunks, mice, and other small animals. Nymphs are a little bit larger than the larva. They are beige with a dark head. Nymphs usually feed on larger animals such as birds and raccoons. The adults vary in color depending if they are males or females. They usually feed on cats, dogs, and humans. Deer ticks are usually found in grassy woodland areas or wide open plains. Deer ticks are more common in the eastern U.S. than in the western U.S.
Mosquitoes are small insects that have a very thin body. Mosquitoes can be found anywhere except for Antarctica. There are about 170 different species of mosquitoes in all of North America. To grow, mosquitoes need a small area of stagnant water. Mosquitoes have been known to breed in fresh water, salt-water marshes, or water found in old tires or plastic containers. The mosquito life cycle has 4 significant stages. They go from eggs to larvae to pupae and finally to adult. Only female mosquitoes can bite. Male mosquitoes feed on mostly flower nectar. West Nile Encephalitis is an infection of the brain caused by the West Nile Virus, a virus found in Africa, Eastern Europe, and West Asia. It is a mystery how West Nile Encephalitis came to the U.S. Some of the possibilities are that infected birds migrated to the U.S. Another possibility is that an infected human traveled here and was bitten by a mosquito here, which then infected more and more people. The symptoms of West Nile Encephalitis are flu-like infections. These are very similar to the symptoms that occur from Lyme Disease.

There are many control measures taken for the preventing of mosquito bites and tick bites. One of the most common ways of preventing bites is by using the chemical permethrin. This chemical is better known as DEET. This chemical has many positive effects. It is very reliable because it is cheap and can be sprayed over fields with a low possibility of being seriously harmed. However, it also has some negative points. Permethrin is known to cause tremors, incoordination, elevated body temperature, and increased aggressive behavior. Permethrin is also toxic to many other organisms such as honeybees and fish. Another way we could protect ourselves from these insects is by applying insect repellents that do not contain DEET. This will not cause any harmful side effects, but may be less effective than applying DEET.
After closely examining the positive and negative aspects of ways to prevent bites, I am concluding that it is more reliable to use DEET rather than another chemical. Even though DEET may cause harmful side effects, it has never been known to permanently damage a person. This makes the use of DEET much more reliable.
