Abstract
The Purpose of this lab is to introduce the basic measurement techniques for the fundamental quantities such as length and mass, to introduce quantitative analysis tools such as the average and the percent difference, and to reinforce other concepts such as unit conversion. In this lab we measured the dimensions of a wooden block using a ruler and Vernier calipers, we also measured its mass using an electronic scale. We used all the measurements to calculate other properties of the block, such as its surface area, volume, and density. (89 words)
Introduction: There is a huge difference between measuring a distance to be 10 cm using a ruler, using a caliper, and using a laser. A ruler can only measure distances reliably down to 1 mm. A set of calipers can do better – down to 0.1 mm, and a laser can do even better. This lab will give us a better understanding of how these tools work.
Methods:
1. Using a ruler, we measured the length, width, and height of our block to the nearest mm. we repeated these measurements twice more.
2. We calculated the average length, average width, and average height of our block from the measurements we made with the ruler.
3. Using the Vernier calipers we measured the length, width and height of
our block to the nearest 0.1mm. We repeated these measurements twice more.

4. calculate the average length, average width, and average height of the block from the measurement we made with the calipers.
5. Use the electronis scale to measure the mass of the block to the nearest 0.01 g. repeat twice more.
6. Average the mass and record it.

Discussion:
The caliper and the ruler averages were all the same so our percent differences was 0%.
Our block will float because it’s density is less than water.
The volume of our block in L is 112.7 ml because our block is 112.7 cm.

Everyone used the same block when taking measurements. So everyone’s measurements are all around the same measurement so the densities of everyone’s measurements won’t be far off from one another.
Conclusion:
I am confident and now I have evidence that my lab group has properly learned how to use the Vernier caliper. We also gained the knowledge of basic measurement techniques for fundamental quantities such as length and mass, percent differences, unit conversion, and average. This lab was helpful Practice in properly using significant figures. In our ending results of this lab we found our measurements to be fairly the same between the ruler and the vernier caliper with a 0% difference in measurements between the two tools. Our volume and surface areas were the same also along with the density which also had a 0% difference in measurements.
