A veterinary technician assists veterinarians as they examine and treat animals. Veterinary technicians must always being working under supervision of a certified veterinarian. They often administer anesthetics to animals prior to surgical procedures. They assist the veterinarians as they perform surgeries. They also sterilize instruments, and clean operating and examining rooms.
They lift and handle animals, and give them medications as prescribed by the veterinarian. They perform dental prophylaxis. They clean the animal cages and prepare food for each animal. They note the conditions and behavior of the animals and report these observations to the veterinarians.
They can do laboratory tests to identify diseases or parasites. Some specialize in caring for small animals and work in veterinary clinics that care for dogs, cats, and other small animals. Others assist veterinarians who care for large animals such as cattle or endangered species housed in zoos. Veterinary techs have to like a variety of work. You have to be organized, efficient, a good people person, and have to be able to follow directions well.
This job may bring you to work long hours, have a chance of injuries, and some very unpleasant working environments. The hours for a vet tech are generally more than 40 hours per week. Some techs that work in small animal clinics often work a good 8 hour days and some late nights and weekends. Techs who work with large animals often work irregular hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays. Schooling for a veterinary technician is a 2 year program.
