Many of us are familiar with the Spice Girls, who held many hit singles throughout the nineties. They were a rock sensation and had millions of fans supporting them through their music, their movies, and their performances. Out of the five Spice Girls, only one is still famous today, Victoria Adams Beckham. She is still known of course for her success with her Spice sisters, for owning her own fashion line, having her own hit singles herself, and for marring her famous husband, David Beckham. With her success throughout her life, she has impacted America in many ways. Victoria Caroline Adams was born on April 17, 1974 in Hertfordshire, England to Anthony and Jacqueline Adams, the first of three children. A few years later came her younger sister Louise and her younger brother Christian. With her mom employed as a clerk and a hairdresser and her father firmly established as an electronic engineer, which provided an easy life for Victoria and her siblings in their younger years (“People”).
Although being the wealthy family they were, it wasn’t always for the best.
Victoria went to St. Mary’s high school in Cheshunt, where the kids would make fun of her and her family for being wealthy. She would beg her dad to not drop her off outside the school in their Rolls Royce because of the embarrassment she would suffer. She was often bullied and kids would throw rocks at her, Victoria had no friends and was considered an outsider (“Victoria Beckham.”).

The desire for performing started when Victoria was watching a film called ‘Fame’ and she then realized that is what she wanted to do. With that, her parents enrolled her at Jason Theatre School where she finished out her high school career and then at seventeen she attended Laine Theatre Arts College to study dance and modeling (“People.”).
At age twenty, Victoria stepped foot into an audition room in London that changed her life forever. The role she was fulfilling was asking for hard-working and energetic young women that could sing and dance. Out of 400 young women who audition, Victoria was one of the five who were chosen to be part of a “new all-female pop music group” (“Victoria Beckham Biography”).
Chris Herbert managed the group, and had quite the line up in front of him which consisted of; Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham. As the girls continued to work together they came to know none of them had the same personality and they were all different in a number of ways. Seeing all the different styles and tastes between them, they soon decided to name their band Spice Girls (“Victoria Beckham Biography”).
Soon after the group began producing their music, they broke off from their manager, Chris Herbert because of his control, and signed on with Brian Fuller and got a contract with Virgin Records. They had many hit singles in the United Kingdom and the United States, the first one being “Wannabe,” which skyrocketed off the charts. Nine more number one singles followed “Wannabe” which came from their albums Spice, Spiceworld and Forever.
The album Spice eventually sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Soon after their name got out there, the media gave all the girls a nickname. Melanie Brown was known as “Scary Spice,” Melanie Chisholm was “Sporty Spice,” Geri Halliwell was “Ginger Spice,” Emma Bunton was “Baby Spice,” and Victoria Beckham was “Posh Spice” (“Victoria Beckham Biography.”).
As their music and performances were selling out in the UK, they traveled and did tours here in the U.S, which impacted America with pop culture. At this time Victoria was seeing famous soccer star, David Beckham, who she soon marries in 1999. As the Spice Girls ended their third album they created movie “Spice World” which then wrapped up the Spice Girls for this time (IMDb).

Victoria Beckham went on to create her own singles after the girls split in 2001. Her first single in the UK was “Out of Your Mind,” which reached number 2 on the UK billborads.
Next was “Not Such An Innocent Girl” and then “A Mind of Its Own” which both reached high numbers on the charts. Not only did she perform with her girls and without them, she also wrote a book about her life experience and started a fashion line. The book she wrote was an autobiography, Learning to Fly, which became a best seller in Britain. The title came from the movie Fame, which influenced Victoria in the first place to peruse her passion for dance and performance (“People”).
She then decided to explore her love for fashion in 2004 when she developed her own line called VB Rocks for Rock & Republic, which mostly consisted of jeans, but sunglasses came along as well.

Victoria Beckham has set a bold mark on the world today through her performances, literary writings and fashion influences. All around the world she has been a role model to girls of all ages. From her songs with her Spice Girls and by herself, to writing a novel and developing her own clothing line, women and children have looked up to Victoria and try to follow in her footsteps, she will be remembered by many for her upbeat sense of fashion and her energetic and lively personality.
