Second, the polluted water can be sent to water treatment plants before it is released into the surrounding water sources. Since algae are the main source of food, for many species of fish, they will also suffer from the high acid levels. Acid rain also soaks into ground and dissolves nutrients from the soil. When the plants call upon these nutrients to grow, the absence kills the vegetation.
Over a short period of time plants begin to die, harming surrounding animal life. The second main category is agricultural pollution. This type of pollution occurs when erosion of crop land dispenses sediments into nearby streams, affecting the clarity of the water and killing the food source of the fish. Another form of agricultural pollution is field run- off. It is caused when a farmer spreads animal wastes and fertilizers onto fields to replenish the lost nutrients, the waste contains high levels of nitrogen. The third major source of contamination is municipal wastes. These wastes include household wastes that run into the water treatments plants. A three-step process is implemented to clean the wastewater. The first step is to remove all the solids and then screen out any smaller particles. Along this new stretch of highway, there are many little streams, but primarily Spring Creek and Benner Creek that are being affected by silt clouding up the water. According to a statement released by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, this form of pollution is killing the food supply in Spring Creek and is threatening the success of the state’s fish hatchery in Benner Creek. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has tested the spring’s water and believes the silt could be coming from Penn Dot’s blasting work on Interstate 99 project. With All these types of pollution threatening our water, vegetation, and wild life we must find effective ways to control how much pollution is released. In addition, we must make an effort to clean up what pollution is already contaminated the oceans, lakes, rivers, and stream that we count on for water.
