During the course of nine weeks, I have studied and constructed the first of what I hope will be many Web sites. The course subjects I learned included planning the site, planning the navigation around the site, learning how to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), using graphics and color to enhance the site, and creating pleasing layouts. However, most important aspect of designing a Web site that I learned was to adhere to web design best practices.
These best practices help to “create well-coded Web sites to strictly follow the standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
The World Wide Web Consortium was organized to set recommended practices that would guarantee the open nature of the Web in 1992. My first Web site, My Life: Capturing the Moments, Creating the Memories, is an autobiographical photography portfolio, is targeted for a private audience of my family and close friends.
The purpose of this Web site project was to create a lasting record of who I am for my children, grandchildren, and family members I will never know. I felt it was important for my family to know its roots in the same way that the Fords, the Rockefellers, and other prominent families know of their ancestors. Although this audience is private in nature, best practices are included in the design of the Web site. WEB DESIGN BEST PRACTICES Page Layout and Navigation My Life is meant to be viewed as a photograph album.

The goal is to have visitors view it on a monitor screen as they would a coffee table book. My goal in making it appealing to the target audience was to use a linear structure that guides the user along a straightforward path (Sklar, 2009).
The book-like linear layout is a simple structure which will guide the visitor forwards and backwards through the Web site pages. Clearly labeled links at the bottom of each page allows the visitor to move to other pages easily and quickly. I also included email links for visitors to send me their comments or suggestions.
In creating My Life, I visited the Web sites of other photographers and some bloggers whose pages were heavy in photographs or graphics. I did not want to overload my Web site with too much animation or graphics that would slow download for the visitor to open my Web site. Color and Graphics I created a woven background from a copyright free image and changed the color of it in Photoshop before importing it into my Web site. I kept the background color grey because I wanted a muted background to the photographs I would import.
According to the Web Development and Design Foundation with XHTML’s Web Design Best Practices Checklist (Morris, 2011) “use of different colors in page background/text is limited to a maximum of three or four colors plus neutrals. ” Using black text throughout (except where text is hypertexted), keeps the photography album look consistent. Other photography Web sites that I visited were also consistent in one color backgrounds changing only to enhance certain sections of their portfolios. Content Presentation
The use of a brush script font in the title and subtitles of my Web pages broke up the monotony of the consistent Arial Black font I used throughout my Web site. I kept in mind that the viewers of my Web site will span many ages and it is important that the text which accompanies my photographs be easy to ready by young children, and large and clear for older adults. The change in color for the navigation links at the bottom of each page and to link to my email via the “Contact Me” links are colorful letters used. The photographs that are added are meant to be the only color portions of the Web site as an electronic photo album.

My Life is a Web site that will be updated a few times a year, especially following important family events such as new babies, marriages, and other events that I participate in. This means that there will be more photographs and text that will be added over time. It is my hope that anyone of any age will be able to access and navigate easily throughout my Web site as it grows. James J. Cappel and Zhenyu Huang wrote, “web usability” is a broad concept that encompasses many aspects of design including a Web site’s presentation, its navigation features, and its functionality or usefulness to visitors”.
