So why is this such an issue? There are a few social and personal things that contribute to so many teen pregnancies; Media, drug use, lack of family support, peer pressure, self-esteem, limited knowledge about sex, and contraceptives. “Almost 50 percent of teens have never considered how a pregnancy would affect their lives.” That statement leads me to believe that teens are unaware of the consequences. Media is doing nothing to help prevention of pregnancy. Many shows targeted toward teenagers, such as “Jersey Shore”, on MTV advocate casual sex, and lack of judgment.
Another show on MTV called “Teen Mom” makes being a teenage mother look very achievable. It would be beneficial if media made teen pregnancy less socially acceptable. Such a deceiving image of making sex look fun, and carefree would fall under the symbolic interactionist prospective. The most applicable theory in my opinion is structural functionalist perspective. I think to help promote wiser decisions I think more reproductive knowledge should be presented to teens in school. I also think that protection should be more accessible to teens. It is important that our young generation has support and education from their teachers and elders. Everyone must work as a team to bring teenage pregnancy rates down.
