In module 1, I found it to be a scary week for me. Not really understanding art, it can make it a tad nerve wrecking for me especially since I know it’s not my forte. To some people they can look at art and understand somewhat of the meaning behind the artist’s work of art. I cannot see this in all images I see. Art to me sometimes will catch my eye and pull me in and then my imagination opens up and I see crazy visuals of the work. This is something that module 1 did teach me. Before, I was not allowing my imagination to open up.
The first week of class learning about the roles of an artist was interesting to me. The artists follow four traditional roles in art which are record the world, give form to abstract ideas, give form to hidden truths, and help us to see the world in new and innovative ways. This to me was interesting because everyone should know that most art work comes from some historical background of something or it has a good meaning behind the piece of art. Knowing that was a role, I understood this role. The part that still gets me in this is the give form to hidden truths.
This is the kind of art that catches my eyes as it is a challenge to see what everyone else is seeing. They also follow three traditional functions of art which are education, entertainment, and art about art. Some of the works of art we view under this topic were quite interesting as well. The ones that stood out more to me were, Albert Bierstadt’s, Rocky Mountains done with oil on canvas from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York. The less traditional function is art about art, but in the new era you would think it would be a higher pick.

The piece we viewed for this was done by Kasimir Malecich of a self-portrait in 1915, and was from the Stedulijk Museum in Amsterdam. Understanding art in some ways is the only way I feel that you can really truly know what you’re looking at. Having my own personal preferences and values help me see art in a better form. Fully allowing me to use the critical and psychological processes of seeing to evaluate the work helps as well. Everyone has different values and preferences, so it makes it a challenge to some who don’t see what everyone else is seeing.
My values are what help guide my decisions in each piece of work I try to see art for what it represents. Some of my values that help guide me through my decisions are my creativity, being open-minded and honest, also being able to be respectful of others and unbiased, and showing compassionate feelings. Some of the main words that stood out to me to help know the definition behind the art form of it was: idealism, form, realism, naturalism, and verism. The word idealism gives tangible form to higher, abstract truths. Form is considered the overall structure of the artwork that you’re viewing.
Realism refers to an image that is reality based. Naturalism refers to an image that is nature based. Verism means truthful and hiding nothing. Anything you see with verism is not fake nothing hidden to cover up flaws. This helps you understand the difference in the content of the art. In module 2 it got a tad more challenging for me this week. This week I just had too much going on to focus straight about anything. We did learn that when you viewing a new work of art that you should always ask who made it, where, why, and when it was made.
Also ask why do I like it? These questions help you understand the piece better. Our lectures taught us that critical thinking is gaining and exercising your dimensions of thinking, viewing, and studying under the apparent or literal form and the context of the work and the spoken or written word. Another thing from module 2 I learned about was that aesthetic object is conceived to encourage the sense of beauty within the viewer. The image that fell in with this description of aesthetic art is Fig. 60 page 48.
The Essay on Comparison Of Avant-Garde & Formal Art Work
A Comparison of Formal and Avant-Garde Artwork Modern art is a unique creation all it’s own, and since it’s beginnings there have been two very distinct groups present. They are the Formalists and the Avant-Garde. The Formalist group believes in the literal representation of the art work. They value the form used, whether it be how the colors are stressed or the techniques used, over the idea ...
To see it in this picture would be nothing like standing in the middle of the floor looking around in it. The word aesthetic sounds like it was something that would disgust you. But, it is the total opposite of what it sounds like, it means beauty. This also showed me that you cannot go off what you just seen, read, or heard as it could give you a total different meaning. There is so much beauty behind the meaning of each arch, the glass windows and fixtures. I do not go to church, although I do find them very interesting when it comes to viewing the art that gets put into building one from ground up.
Beauty in anything you do always gives us pleasure. The lectures asked us if art should offer us the visual pleasure, reaffirm our values or even reflect upon our own values. I would say yes! If you look at each and every artist work, it has something to do with following their visual pleasures and the values they follow. The more you follow what values you represent, you mind is open to many abilities, just depending on what you follow. I have also learned that not any one person will view the same piece of art as the same.
Everyone has different opinions about everything from their values to their pleasure. So this is going to generate all the different views. I myself began the course thinking I was supposed to view art like everyone else. This has taught me perceive it in my own values and aesthetics. As in both modules stressed to us that the historical purpose for art was for the education and entertainment and/or pleasure. If art was offered for my viewing of history of things we needed to know I feel now that I would have been more open-minded with it and seen the visuals or reading the books.
Art is extremely intelligent if you can just control your mind, relax, and see what you can of the work. Being able to relax your soul and mind opens your brain to all kinds of creative ideas. I would say that education of art is what I have always overlooked. Now, that I have viewed it more and understand that I don’t have to see what everyone else does. I feel like I would want to study more art with less pressure. With the closer look interrupting the art for longer periods, it allows me to be more relaxed and accept it as well.
The Report on All About Art
WHAT IS ART? We call lots of things art today. We use the term visual arts to describe the arts we can see. Painting, sculpture, and architecture have long been the major visual arts in Europe and North America. Today, we include photography, furniture, pottery, jewelry, and many other arts and crafts among the visual arts. Sometimes we speak of the fine arts—other forms of expression that appeal ...
