My topic was, what is success? And the main knowledge issue I focused on is, should success be measured in happiness or money?
The idea of success for allot of people is get educated, get a job, get married, get old. Once they have found that, they have succeeded in life and there is nothing more that needs to be done. Or maybe even as simple as just “get rich”, if that hasn’t happened then they haven’t reached their personal goal. But are you successful if you are unhappy and rich? If you are plagued by any wrongs that you might have committed on your way up can you be happy? I would use mark zuckerberg as an example but we don’t know, to the public he looks fairly happy, but at the end of the social network I thought he looked miserable, plagued by the things he posted about his ex-girlfriend. Although it was untrue, he’s married to his girlfriend that he has had since college.
When I first read the question I thought of Dexter yelling success every time he finished tightening a bolt in one of his machines. His happiness came after his material success, where he is focused until he is finished, neglecting everything else, telling anyone who wants to have a social interaction to go away. And when he finally does finish, his sister torments him, taking away the happiness that he got from that small material gain. His lab is filled with gadgets and computers and such, yet he still builds more. There is also the idea that financial success is more likely to come after happiness, meaning that money relies on your happiness. You are much more likely to make more money and do a better job with something that you love. Yet she is still unhappy to not have a claim to that fortune. Her grandfather would not let her fall into a complete economic crisis, even now he is sending her money every month and on holidays, but she has no claim to the money that the rest of her family does. Some people may want to be an itinerant, living life with little material possessions, like Daniel suello. This man left his life savings in a phone booth and is now living in the desert, completely content with his condition of living. or even being a drifter, with no home or income, not being self-sufficient, relying on charity and donations of people who do work. A personal example, my great grandparents live in an extended trailer home sitting on a plot of land they have had since they got married.
They have been in an out of poverty with their only source of income lately coming from their son and my great grandfather selling things at the flea market. Yet they are happy people, every time I see them they have a smile on their faces. They have no internet, only local TV channels, and two of the three bedrooms are out in the cold every night. But they still send me letters of love, and even sometimes put a candy in the envelope. Their happiness comes from the fact that they are still with family and have this plot of land that they worked hard for and have had for over 60 years. So, my personal opinion, success is measured and made with happiness, some might go into a job simply for the money, while others will do what makes them happy.
