A Great Novel and a Good read can be completely different or even the same depending on the person. People are different, and therefore will have their own opinions, meaning people will consider one book in many different ways. A book such as ‘The Boy in Striped Pyjamas’ by Frank Boyne, is a prime example of a book that can both be considered a great novel or a good read. What makes a good novel or a good read you ask, well that is down to the reader? Great novels push the bounds of thought and develop ideas that the reader can discuss. The people who enjoy books like these are people who take pleasure in being stretched philosophically and culturally. Although not everyone a difficult read, they can be interesting and enjoyable for some. Good books can be considered for the less intellectual mind but in reality they are just as knowledgeable as any other book. In this piece we will be discussing what makes a Great Novel rather than a Good Read. We will explore different parts of a book such as the characterization or the time and place setting.
In a great novel the setting plays a big part in making it what it is. A great novel will have a setting that contains a realistic background and will be generally set in the past. Where as in a good read the setting can be anything from a distant planet in the near future to the life in a futuristic city. These setting will reflect the writing that will take place in the book. The setting in ‘The Boy I Stripped Pjs’ is of a concentration camp where a young German boy becomes friends with a Jewish boy. This setting is, as in most great novels, set in the past during WW2 when England and Germany were at each other’s throats. These dark times that the book is set in, helps the book to become almost dark itself. This darkness draws the reader into the story making them see the pain, suffering and hardship the time period has to offer. This involvement in the setting for me makes the book a great Novel, but as we progress through this paper things may become different.

To make a great novel you need to manipulate your writing to capture the reader and involve them in the story. An emotional range of feelings will do just that. A great novel will provide this in large quantities changing the mood generally from happy, or close to, it to sad. “We are not supposed to be friends you and I” (When Bruno is told that he cannot be friends with Jews, talking to Shmeul.) This shows the hate that even can test the friendship of two boys making us feel emotional about the situation and causing us to feel grief ‘for’ them. This small piece of evidence shows us that the book makes us feel emotion and therefore it could be considered a great novel even more.
Within great novels philosophical ideas are tested and pushed forward or disproved where as good reads tend to be a bit more user friendly, with facts or true stories. The boy in stripped pyjamas is set in a Jew extermination camp in Germany during WW2 and therefore a story based on fact and maybe some truth to the story. This aspect of the plot being based on fact rather than ideas helps to form a more logical, simpler and easier read than an in-depth introspective read. Although the ideas that are written are sad and depressing, Nazi Germany was not a good place for the Jews. Although these ideas are mealy fact and therefore mean that to a older reader only facts and not philosophical. This helps the case for the book to be a good read.
The narrative style also plays a large part in determining a great novel, a good read will take up a easily comprehensible style of writing so that the reader can climb into the world of the book as though watching a 3D TV. The reader can understand all that is going on without having to think in-depth pushing past all the metaphorical ideas, instead the information is right under there nose. A great novel goes into deep statements about the ideas, and in my opinion this does not happen in the book. This makes the book more of a good read as it is easily accessible to all even younger generations, although the plot may be a bit upsetting.
The Essay on Great Gatsby the Book Compared to the Film
The fact that I did not enjoy reading The Great Gatsby is irrelevant to the fact that I hated the movie. Though I didn't enjoy the content of the book, I respect Fitzgerald. I respect the honesty that is reflected in his writing style. I respect the depiction of the era in which The Great Gatsby took place. This movie is an unbelievably terrible attempt at bringing this book on screen. The major ...
A great novel when written will last for generations probably at least a couple of years, where as a good read will only be read and forgotten. The boy in stripped pyjamas has been around for only a couple of years but it is already becoming a great novel as it is known by many generations. The perspective form the reader is every thing you cannot expect the same reaction from an adult of that of a young child, it doesn’t happen. Age but also race, gender and sex all will have an effect on a person’s perspective. No 2 people will always agree with one another, we have our different opinions and we stick to them. This means that even though I have given you some good points as to why the Boy in Stripped Pyjamas is a good novel or good read ultimately it is up to you. What do you think makes a great novel or a good read. That I leave up to you.
