In 1900 the countries of Europe, together with the United States and Japan, dominated the world. The great powers were suspicious of each other, and made alliances with each other for safety. Germany was a fairly new country; it had only existed since 1870, and its neighbours were worried that if it continued to grow it would become the greatest power in the world. The powers settled in to two groups. The triple alliance linked Germany, the Austrian Empire and Italy; the Triple Entente brought together Britain, France and Russia. The terms of these agreements were secret. One side could not know exactly what countries on the other side would do to support each other. In western Europe, France had lost land (Alsace Lorraine) …read more.

Conclusion
However, Militarism has a large part as well as the fact that Britain and Germany created a small rivalry between the two countries and Russia mobilizing its army also got Germany angry. Imperialism caused Germany to get angry at Britain and France when France embarrassed Germany at Morocco and then Britain backed up France. Also the fact that Britain and France had more overseas colonies got Germany jealous and they wanted more. The triple alliance separated Europe into almost two sides and made the war much bigger. b) Who was most to blame for starting the First World War? I think that Germany is to blame mainly for the First World War but I think that some other countries are to blame as well. The fact that Germany was part of the Triple Alliance and the Triple Alliance and they did not let Bosnia have their independence meant that Serbia were not happy and Russia got involved. One could say that Russia should not have been involved but maybe if Germany and Austria Hungary had let Bosnia have their independence none of the war would have happened. Also Germany’s jealousy over the fact that Britain and France had so many more colonies may have meant that Germany rushed into war and also when the Kaiser was embarrasses by France he may have wanted revenge. The Kaiser was ‘ambitious’ for his country and he thought that war was best. Therefore I think Germany were mainly to blame. …read more.
