It requires a lot more from its viewer that most other films, as it is only fully understood when looked at deeply and intensely. However, the film comes highly recommended, as it is thoroughly enjoyable and wonderful for the maturing teenage mind. Overall I can see why this film won so many awards; its clever use of repetition is amazing and the casting of characters is perfect, though not many people (teenagers) would consider it a good film I think as times passes it would be remembered as a masterpiece. The use of creative technical features throughout the film adds greatly to its appeal. The color of the film is warm and affable. The mid-western sunsets and sprawling fields are beautifully photographed, making the atmosphere of the town intensely real.
One of the most perfectly realized scenes is when camera is focusing on the grand opening of a burger franchise, Burger Barn, attended by the entire town and accompanied by the off-key high school band. Not a single note in the depiction of Endora rang false. If nothing ever happens here, why does it always happen to me? I do not think one quote from the film describes it better than this one, spoken by Johnny Depp, a perennial favorite of many moviegoers for all the right reasons. This heart-warming little story is given life by some fantastic performances from all involved, starting with young Leo DiCaprio as Arnie, the retarded little boy nearing his 18th birthday. Leos Oscar-nominated performance in this film may be enough to convince anyone to check this out, but the lad has some competition. Darlene Cates is a breakthrough as the 500-pound matriarch whose weight is a burden on the entire family. Poor Gilbert has to work two jobs just to feed her and even the ever-annoying Juliette Lewis manages to come through in a sweet way not bad.

Slowly his resentment built up, until he realized that he could no longer live his entire life for other people.Johnny Depp expertly demonstrated the tension central to Gilbert by playing everything below the surface, but he never gave in to one-dimensional blankness or simply regurgitated his naive roles in films such as Edward Scissorhands.
