Nowadays reading and writing is not a privilege or a status, it is a way of communication and a significant part of our everyday life. Time when most of literate and educated people were from wealthy and privileged families is long gone. It is no longer the case when people from less fortunate families would be bound to do a hard labor and never get a chance to get a proper education. Before exploring the subject, let’s first define the meaning of the word democracy. Democracy, according to Merriam Webster dictionary, is a form of government in which supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodic free elections. Democracy represents the principles of social equality, rights, privileges and respect for the individual within a community where minority has equal rights with majority. democratic society is not an environment of political prejudice, but freedom of speech and religion. Every country and every nation has its own history and believes.
The Soviet Union had totalitarian control and the United States is a federal republic. People from these countries fought and still fight for their freedom of speech and democratic rights. social media is a crucial part of life these days and age. Let’s take a look at two countries with different political controls. During The Soviet Union era there was no democracy. Books in store were limited to Karl Marks’, Vladimir Lenin’s works or the one that was explaining the importance of communism. Nevertheless, people who wanted to know what was beyond the Iron Curtain despite the fear to be pursued somehow found prohibited literature, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. They wanted to live in democratic society even it only meant to read books under a sheet or to write poems no one ever would heard. In the United States people accept democracy for granted. They do not value it. Perhaps they forgot that only 200 years ago their ancestors fought and died for it. One of the most famous fighter for democracy was the Founder Father and the third President of the US, Thomas Jefferson, who set an education as a primary and necessary component of human’s life, “ To give to every citizen the information he needs for the transaction of his own business; To enable him to calculate for himself, and to express and preserve his ideas, his contracts and accounts, in writing;
The Essay on People often complain about life in the U.S.
People complain when most of their needs are not met. The irony of it lies when complaints are just piled up without any further insights on how to solve such problems. In the long run, complaints become a part of the lifestyle of people who are good at pointing at the loopholes most especially of the government, and of the leaders. As there would always be a reason for every action that is done, ...
To improve by reading, his morals and faculties; To understand his duties to his neighbors and country, and to discharge with competence the functions confided to him by either; To know his rights… To instruct the mass of our citizens in these, their rights, interests and duties, as men and citizens, being then the objects of education in the primary schools, whether privet or public, in them should be taught reading, writing and numerical arithmetic, the elements of ministration…and the outlines of geography and history.” Jefferson dedicated his life fighting for freedom of choice, expression and democracy. Today is an era of merging technology and expansion of social media. This growth became an essential part of human life in which reading is more important than ever. Social media, like Facebook.com, Twitter.com and YouTube.com, is designed to serve many purposes. Main purpose is to function as a source of communication, sharing experience and emotions. But there are some roles which give the media a manipulative power to confuse the public. On would ask what is it? It is very simple.
The Essay on Social Media And Media Education
1. Social media and Media Education in the 2000s Media Education can be described quite enlightening and protecting sector in the education field. Social media is seen as a lurking, horrible threat, which could make an inexperienced follower’s worldview easily distorted. For instance, web travel providers, such as Expedia.com, Tripadvisor.com or Travelocity.com, are luring their potential customers to visit unpopular destinations by creating an illusion of popularity through social media. Once you become a “follower” on Twitter or you “like” the page on Facebook, other people do the same by instinct or impulse. In a first place, an advertised page increases number of people who are interest in, than it’s this high number give you an assumption that maybe this place liked by so many people is a good place to go. Here is an example: Californian city Temecula is located about 70 miles away from Los Angeles. It has a picturesque landscape and a unique climate which allows wineries to grow particular sorts of grape, different from the one grown in Napa Valley as a random choice. A year ago no one knew such place even existed, but after colossal promoting campaign on Expedia.com through Facebook just in couple weeks the number of bookings in Temecula increased for more than 70 percents. Other good example is recent attacks of the United States Embassies in the Middle East and India.
How can it be possible in a democratic society that single video among millions of other posted on YouTube caused all these riots and murders? The answer is most likely in people who under influence of using social media as a source of information and news let themselves to become a target of influence and manipulation. It is the same people who simply cannot divide what is true, what should be neglected or what is misled. They are unable to separate what to take seriously and what is a manipulation. It is sad truth that printed books and magazines become unpopular and are attracting less and less readers. Unfortunately printed media is the only source of information which has been properly edited. Therefore it develops human ability to analyze facts. Our ancestors, trough many efforts and sacrifices, made it possible for us that education and literacy is a normalcy of 21st century.
It was not that long ago when a writer to be Malcolm Little (who changed his name to Malcolm X in order to get rid of his “black” background) suffered from illiteracy. “I became increasingly frustrated at not being able to express what I wanted to convey in letters that I wrote,” says Malcolm in his Autobiography of Malcolm X. “… trying to write simple English, I not only wasn’t articulate, I wasn’t even functional.” He understood that education should be a part of people’s everyday life. He dreamed about the time when beginning very young age, parents would teach their children about importance of getting a proper education. I hope his believes did not die and will be remembered for many years to come. Today we need to be cautious about all seductions of modern life and respect the legacy provided by our ancestors.
